Yes. Hospitals rarely get reimbursed full charges. Medicare, Medicaid and Workman’s Compensation reimbursement rates are set by the Government. Private insurance companies usually are contracted with the hospitals and reimbursed at a negotiated rate. Those without insurance, we’ll in most cases if you can’t afford insurance, you’re not going to be able to pay a huge hospital bill.

Kind of interesting. I never agreed to anything. Was under an anesthetic the whole period. My spouse gave any permissions the hospital got. I am well known for being very difficult when coming out of an anesthetic. And the one thing I remember is being unable to move my right leg. (was the site of the arteriogram entry).Got hollered at by spouse and medics if I so much as moved it. Spouse and daughter stroked me for an hour then I fell asleep. They left at 3AM.

part of new hire orientation was a demonstration of the various medical devices they made, how they were inserted into the body, exactly where the devices "lived" in the body. twas fascinating to learn.

each medtronic facility handled a different body part. the one i worked at made stents/catheters for the heart; another location took care of the spine; another was the brain. i remember one year a hurricane was headed for florida/carolina(?) & the facility there was evacuating - including the human spines they had had in the freezers.

things you don't think of doing while working on the west coast.....

Still, that's very little for a 300k bill. It must not include compensation for the doctors.

You’re correct. That’s just the facilities reimbursement. Each physician involved (ex. Attending, radiologist, consultants, etc.) all bill and are reimbursed separately.

Do they bill through the hospital or directly to the patient? I'm guessing through the hospital as it would be a mess otherwise.

No, hospital and physicians bill separately. Physicians bill through their practices. Say your attending physician orders a consultation by a cardiologist. The cardiologist along with your attending physician each independently submit a claim to the insurance that indicates initial and subsequent visits along with any procedures performed.
