What is recommended around here for irrigation systems when we get cold weather? Shut down and drain? Anything else? I have three kind of exposed areas: Vacuum breaker, valve to the zones in backyard and the manifolds. All these are in plastic “boxes” and mostly underground. All other piping is underground. I put pipe insulation on the pipes that are in the boxes, but nothing for the manifolds. We are not in the “valley” but up somewhat in Black Mountain area.

Only thing you need to do is cover or insulate the vacuum breaker and any above ground exposed piping. No need to drain.

Star nursery has the best vacuum breaker cover I have found. The large size fits best. Works on pool vac breaker cover too.

Will those thick plastic boxes be enough cover?

I ended up shutting down the system for the next few days, I figure the plants should be fine.

I can second this, they are large and work quite well.
