Hello all. I moved to las vegas from florida a couple of years ago and my body just can't get used to this dry air. My main problem is dry nasal passages. I've been debating on whether to get a humidifier to see if that will help with that and if it helps my dry eyes and skin then thats just a bonus. Anyway my point is im deathly afraid of seeing a scorpion in my house. I haven't yet but worried the moisture will attract them or even roaches. Also afraid of but being from florida im used to those. So i was wondering if anyone around here uses humidifiers, have u seen scorpions in your home due to the moisture? Im just scared of buying one and seeing those things all of a sudden. *shudder* thanks in advance if anyone can offer some reassurance to this nervous desert newbie

You could look at installing a swamp cooler (something like a Bonaire Durango) - it will definitely add some moisture tom the air in your house and also save you a stack of money as they cost a lot less to run than regular ac.

I don't think the use of a cool air humidifier will attract insects. It's not going to raise your overall in house humidity to FL levels.

I have a humidifier that maintains 35% humidity in the house and have no spiders etc.

Thats a great cooler and all but a little useless this time of year.
If the OP owns her own home, she can consider adding a central humidifer to the hvac unit, such as we did.
Our hvac thermostat also has a humidity setting built into it, I keep it at 40% and am happy with that, although some prefer more and some prefer less.

I bought a whole house humidifier, which is kind of a misnomer really. You need one for each room in a place like Vegas or even in Denver. Still it does the trick, improves things from a breathing perspective plus mostly eliminates the static electricity shocks and helps you sleep better. The problem is no matter what you use the moment you step out of the house the issues you have come back immediately.

I own the Essick AIR H12-400HB. I bought it primarily because in the winter the wood flooring I had installed was pulling away from the walls and my new baseboards were separating due to the lack of moisture in the AIR.
This unit does a great job of maintaining 35% in the main part of the house where the wood floors are. Also helps in the other rooms too. Total square feet is 3,800.

We have the Aprilaire600 unit and it is tied in to the central air unit. Portables are ok but most all use a wicking type of pad and after a couple weeks of hard use, they dont like to absorb water as well. If more manufactures used a pump setup to pump water to the pad, they would work much better.
