I doubt very highly that you'd save $150/month by changing the HVAC equipment in your house. The problem isn't the equipment- it's a 20 y/o house with inadequate insulation, old windows, etc.,- new equipment will never overcome these issues. Before you spend $3k on new HVAC, you may want to consider spending a few hundred dollars blowing an extra 12" of insulation into your attic, and look into replacing your windows- those are the two largest sources of heat gain.

I'm currently in Maryland and our electric company raised rates 40% two years ago and are going to raise again this year. I pay over 300 a month during the summer and it doesn't get as hot here as Vegas. However we have horrible humidity due to the fact that our nations capital is built on a swamp. Just thought I'd share my sob story.

Have been to Foggy Bottom in the summer many times and the humidty and heat is a killer. Makes me sick if I do any kind of exercise in it. Don't have that problem in the desert. Also don't usually have the problem of the a/c freezing up like they can in humdity.
