Hi all!

So if I am on an existing well and my own septic and
want to add a casita or small house to the lot next to our house
(part of our lot), a few questions:
1. Would I need to have a new well and septic installed or
have to tie to city lines? My husband seems to think we
can just attach to our existing system but I don't think it
works that way.
2. Is the answer to #1 based on distance to existing systems,
capacity of existing system or size of the new house/casita?

Any links to reading materials or contractors/builders who can
quote a project would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Mariza

Myself, I'm lazy, averse to taking risks, and in a hurry, so my advice is to sell your home and buy one that already has the casita. After all, a good wife deserves a new home every so often, right. Am I right?

Nice try but this IS the new house. Bought December 2019
and moved into September 2020. And I did splurge on this one..
we upsized rather than downsized.
This is gonna be it (unless I hit Powerball/Megamillions)
for the next 20 years!!!

My husband is actually very keen on the casita/guest house that
could double as a weekend Gaming mancave for guy friends idea.

There are a couple of things to be wary of...

First off check to be sure you can tie another bath to the main system. The problem is that the Septic System may require that you bring the septic system up to current cove if you add more demand. And that is a big deal...well over $10,000.

If you think you might ever sell off the added property you might also look at the cost of hooking to the local water supply. I would think there is a main down Fort Apache so it may be less expensive than you would think. Find out first though. That would also suggest a sewer connection or a new septic for the new home. I doubt that a new septic will be allowed as there is a sewer nearby.

For septic stuff go to SNHD...

I would also check with the State Engineer Office on extending the well to another dwelling. Call it a casita and be vague about how big it is. There is an office around Alta and the 15.

Here is a link...

For Building permits and checking on what you need to do...

Also you might also check with your well driller and a local septic guy for advice.

Call me if you need anything else...

Thanks for the links and info. I want to be able to put a price tag
on it and see if it is within our means. (or how painful it would be
to make it happen). I'm fairly sure they just put in some sewer lines
on the recent Ft Apache road construction upgrade. I'll have to go
back to that notice to see what exactly they are doing/planning.

Right now construction crews are spilling on to part of our property
line with the construction. I'll be happy when they finish...that back up
truck beeping thing all day is very annoying.
