I have shopped and shopped for a home warranty that actually pays for AC replacement. The ones I can find pay about $1500 and that is it!

Several of the service providers sent out under Old Republic were from a couple hours away rather than local companies. A number of them didn't seem to know what they were doing...It was a very bad experience using Old Republic..

I think it cost me about $4500 to replace the AC and Old Republic only paid about $1600 toward that cost. So they only really paid me for part of an AC system...

My dad is paying 380 per year for a service contract solely on his heatpump. Seems a lot more legit than old Republic, who I wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

I had American Home Shield. I had a Freus air conditioner (with a water cooled compressor). A water pump went out on it, and I called AHS. They sent a technician to the house that afternoon, who did nothing and left. For the next week (with temps around 115), they kept giving me the run-around. Depending upon who I talked to, the pump was either on order or they couldn't find one. After living in a hotel for five days and AHS apparently unable (or unwilling) to do anything, I called the company who installed the A/C. Within an hour, it was repaired and running. AHS paid me half of what I paid for the repair, despite the fact that they accomplished nothing. (They also charged me $400 for a water heater that they got for free, paid me $475 to replace a $1,700 refrigerator, and failed to repair a dishwasher in four visits, but those are other stories).

Here's my experience with Old Republic. I have an old AC. They were very prompt with replacing the AC blower motor one year, and last year replaced my compressor. That was a $2400 repair. For both services I only paid the trade fee of $75. So far they have been pretty good for me. I will continue to use them.

Looking at replacing 25 year old HVAC system. Got three bids. Curious if anybody has feedback on brands or installers:

Sierra Air (Lennox) - Most expensive by a fair amount
Sahara Air (Amana) - Cheapest
Mojave Air (Maytag) - Just above cheapest
