You heard what they said? That perfectly reasonable things could also be used to suppress votes. The article cited explains and there are many others that deal with the goings on in NC .

I don't want to bother looking for articles, so I'll say this.

In the past, they have had Grandfathered voting rights, reading test and requirements to pass testing in order to vote in the south. So, blacks were asked questions and required to get them right before they were allowed to vote. Whites who could not read did not have to take this test if their grandfathers were voters, so they got to vote without any questions. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, many blacks were asked to take a test by white election officials, while new white registrants were not asked. SELECTIVE APPLICATION OF A RACIST LAW = VOTER SUPPRESSION.
Today's voter suppression goes towards ID laws. Now ID sounds like a good thing so that we can verify everyone has an ID. WELL, you know who doesn't have Drivers Licenses? Poor people who don't have a car. Now Why don't we give out free state issued IDs to all students in high school at their high schools if they live under the poverty line? It's pretty easy since most of the parents have already registered for the free lunches and such so it's just a matter of getting some computer to interface with the DMV's system and taking a picture. If that happens, I would be all for checking everyone's ID at the voter registration and voting booth. Get me free IDs for the poor, minority, underserved and even rural areas, and I will stand on your side with voting requires ID crowd.
