Gamblers tastes and desires have evolved. Marketers and operations people in casinos realize this isn't the 80s or 90s, that ship has sailed. Today's higher value gamblers want higher priced food for their comps. Buffet demand from comped guests had fallen off considerably except at the high-end buffets like Bacchanal, they were increasingly asking for comps at the fine dining or the unique restaurants the casinos have been increasingly offering. The buffet was increasingly becoming a draw for lower value customers, making it an even bigger money loser for the casinos.

LOL...was thinking the same thing myself. I'm getting sick just reading this thread and the thought of people gorging. The only time I have even gone to a buffet in a casino in the last decade is if I was in a rush, but didn't want the offerings of say a Starbucks. Oatmeal, a little bit of protein, fruit....gone. And that's a good thing because watching people keep coming back with one plate after another of food just grosses me out. But to each their own.

Wow so much negativity - my DH and I love buffets - a little of this - a little of that. We get to try numerus items instead of having to decide on just one. I love the salad bars. People can eat healthy if they want.

Probably because buffets tend to be low on the quality side. And then if you go to most of the higher ranked ones in Vegas (i.e. Wicked Spoon, Bachanal, Wynn), you're dropping $40 to $50 on food no better than a coffee shop. Most people I know are beyond the starving student mentality, so loading up on lower quality food isn't exactly their idea of a good time.

I go to the buffet to eat healthy...said no one ever! Well maybe they said it, but did they mean it?

I think buffets are sort of a legacy of something you only did in Vegas in the past, so it had some cachet like staying up past your bedtime, going out partying and drinking, gambling, clubbing, etc. Now that most people have a casino closer to home, the novelty wore off. If you live in Vegas or really close to a casino buffet anywhere I doubt you go all that often.

I remember when the M buffet opened or even back to when the Rio buffet opened. They were jammed because the food was better than you'd expect at a buffet. The first time or two you go you think wow I gotta do this often. Then a couple times later you are thinking why do I do this?

You're mistaken.
There was a crowd of us that would go to Sweet Tomatoes weekly.
Unfortunately, it won't be reopening.

As for Vegas buffets, I'd actually go to Red Rock or one of the
Station Casino buffets weekly if they were open. At $13-$15 for lunch,
I like having a full range of food available without having to decide on
my exact meal. I'd probably do the Rio once a month for dinner...

You can eat healthy at a buffet..as long as you eat in moderation...same
as eating out in any other restaurant. Americans aren't exactly known
for moderation though...I think the current statistic is probably 40% of
Americans are classified as obese.

I don't know the statistics for locals eating at buffets but I'm sure
it was quite high for the local (non-strip) casinos.

We typically do the buffet in our Vegas hotel 2-3 times per trip for breakfast. Maybe once or twice for dinner. It's easy, convenient and relatively cheap for breakfast. You can get fresh omelettes at many of the buffets. Some even offer broth soups that are great after a late night that "might" involve drinking.

For dinners I tend to focus on the proteins that aren't fried and add a salad. I usually ignore the high carb stuff like mac and cheese or rice.

The MGM buffet opened a couple weeks too late for our last trip. I'm hoping the Mirage buffet is open in September when we go again.
