My husband wants to cancel a trip due to covid. I'm conflicted if it's necessary. We arranged this trip a month and a ½ ago before the Delta variant started ramping up. Just a pleasure trip to visit family and friends. Maybe take in a small local concert, restaurants, visiting in homes. We live in Las Vegas and will be traveling to an Eastern state.

NV seems to be a hot spot and apparently LA county recommends not coming here. They are starting up masking again and our SNHD is recommending the same. We are both vaccinated but visiting people we know aren't and aren't interested in getting the vaccine.

My dh is worried that we might pass on the virus because of the increasing numbers in NV and he doesn't want to deal with the guilt. I said we would have no idea that it was us as they are around plenty of other people. I get his point though. Plus the hassle of masking everywhere if it turns into that in six weeks doesn't sound too great. We were looking forward to a vacation like the old days without restrictions.

Any thoughts? What would you do?

I live in Vegas, I was going out to restaurants for a while but have stopped again. I've had both shots of the Pfizer vaccine, but have seen local people on the news who are fully vaccinated, got the Delta variant and said it was awful. Too many tourists coming here, too many locals who have not been vaccinated. There are shows, casinos and restaurants that have opened, I'm not going any time soon. Positivity rates are over 11%. Headline in recent local newspaper: Southern Nevada Health District recommends face masks for all. The Southern Nevada Health District is now recommending that both those vaccinated against COVID-19 and unvaccinated people wear masks in crowded indoor public places. The recommendation comes as COVID-19 as test positivity rates, case counts and hospitalizations continue to increase in Southern Nevada. “Using masks correctly has proven to be effective in helping to prevent people from getting and spreading COVID-19,” the health district said in a news release. “With the rise in cases and slowing vaccine rates in Clark County, the Health District’s recommendation to wear masks in crowded public settings, including grocery stores, malls, large events, and casinos, is a step to fully utilize the tools we have available to stop the pandemic.”

Does it sound like a fun place to visit now or anytime in the near future?

Another recent headline: Nevada’s COVID-19 metrics remain high, with more new cases and deaths

New COVID-19 cases remained well above the moving 14-day average of daily reported cases, which increased to 539. The average has been climbing steadily since it reached a recent low of 133 on June 10, state data shows.

Fatalities reported on Friday also remained higher than the moving two-week average of three deaths per day.

Unlike Nevada’s other major disease metrics, fatalities have remained relatively flat in recent weeks. But Thursday’s 15 reported deaths was the highest single-day increase in fatalities since April, state data shows.

It seems like it's going to be a personal choice on your part. From what I read vaccinated people are less likely to transmit the virus (less likely != zero). All I can say and this purely subjective information, I've had two friends in Vegas, both fully vaccinated for months now, come down with COVID in the last two weeks. They both got sick but just cold sick not in the hospital sick. Those were the first two I've personally known to get sick after being vaccinated.

NV's COVID infection metrics, roughly speaking, are back to what they were in Feb 2021.

I should have explained and worded my post better. I live in LV too and traveling to a different state (where numbers are rising too). Dh is worried about the higher numbers here and the chance of bringing that to family and friends out East.

I agree with your thoughts movin1. So from this new info of mine, would you cancel the trip?

EDIT: I edited my first post for clarity

I would go to Vegas FOR SURE! At this point, what I have heard, is similar to what WestieJeff says above. It's an extremely low chance for vaccinated people to get it or spread it and something like less than 1% of hospitalized Covid patients had been vaccinated. So be a little careful, keep distance when talking to people when you can, wear a mask if that works for you, and ENJOY LIFE! Or leave Hubbie at home and maybe you'll have an even better time!?

I'm not planning to travel until things get under control again. I don't want to be in crowds or crowded venues, restaurants, airports, airplanes, hotels etc. Delta variant is spreading like wildfire. Not enough data about how it affects vaccinated people - I don't want to risk getting it and possibly spreading it. I wouldn't visit unvaccinated friends to protect them, myself and anyone else I might come into contact with not knowing if I'm infected with Covid.

Your choice, but the facts are pretty simple. Spread and adverse risks falls almost exclusively on unvaccinated people. Is masking up and shutting things down going to convince unvaccinated people that they should go get the vaccine? Sure doesn't seem like it, that's why I don't see Las Vegas making any new restrictions mandatory.

So if you're concerned with what could happen from your actions to unvaccinated people, maybe rethink that and ask why aren't they taking more responsibility for their own risks? Until such mindset change occurs, we'll never get out of this mess. Instead of saying I'll reduce the risks for the unvaccinated, you should amplify the risks to them in hopes they finally do what's needed to effectively end the pandemic.

Thankfully I live in OC and don't listen to recommendations from LA County so I went to Vegas for the weekend and had a great time! In fact I may even go again in a couple of weeks if I can get away.

I am vaccinated. Wear a mask? Uh, yeah....no.

Next: I am expecting the government to issue a stay at home/shelter in place order for all of the vaccinated people for the next year to protect the unvaccinated. The unvaccinated will be allowed full freedom of movement and not required to wear masks, since the vaccinated will no longer pose a threat. It's the only way we're gonna beat this!

Why do you care about the health of the Anti-Vaxxers? They made their choice…let them all get sick and learn the hard way. I would have zero guilt.

iirc correctly, Pfizer is about 60% effective at preventing infection by the delta variant and something over 90% have a really good outcome if stung by delta (i.e. no major symptoms).

I'd still be social distancing, wearing a mask when other people are around, and getting plenty of natural vitamin d outside.
