I posted a three part question but thought I'd separate this one.

Crime... Vegas is a high crime area I've read.

When living in apartments, do 2nd floor units get broken into just as much as 1st floor/ground level?

And if so, do they break down the door or do they use ladders to reach the 2nd floor balcony? Or do they climb trees to the roof then scale down to land on the balcony?

I'm wondering what steps I should take to ensure my 2nd floor apt over at Eagle Trace doesn't get hit. I'm going to buy and install 2 night latches ( I think they are called that)..the kind that is screwed into the frame and then the piece goes perpendicular at the door to preven it from opening. I figure 2 would be double protection.

But what about when I'm not home?

Who told you Las Vegas was high crime. It is not. On murder rate it is in the bottom half of cities above 250K. see...

United States cities by crime rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It is better than that on property crime and a little worse on violent crime rate. Under no conditions is it in the top 10 or 20 ro 30% of cities based on crime.

Burlglary is mostly a crime of convenience. It is more convenient to hit lower floors. I have heard a cop suggest this was true. I am not aware of any data though that proves it one way or the other.

Best protection is a dog. Next an alarm. There are alarms suited for apartment use.

If the burglar is willing to make noise there really is no good defense. You hit a window with a big enough thing and you are in. Had a home burgled that way once. Took out a large permanent plate glass window. Bigger damage in fact was the $800 window. Standard tactic for golf course homes. Go down the golf course and ring the bell at homes without lights. No one answers you bust out a back window.

Where do people get the idea that Vegas is the center of crime? I mean every single big city has crime, nothing you can do about it. What do you expect to get if you live in a mix of 2 million people? There are few basic city rules you have to always follow:
Never leave your door open, don't ever open your door unless you know the person personally, never leave anything valuable in your car and lock it every single time. Never carry big sums of money with you, don't walk by yourself through dark alleys in the night (or day). Be aware of everything that's happening around you, and other than that you can't really do anything else.

you are thinking of crime prevention very very good. many people that are not on ground floor leave the windows open, big big mistake.
good for you.

The idea came from reading this very forum. There's an older thread regarding this apartment complex but my questions are more specific.

I did a search thru a link for the LVPD and discovered alot of robberies and some other things.... don't really understand how to read the reports. All it gives is 5300 block...which is where the apartment is located.

I'm sure Las Vegas is just like any other city, per capita I mean. But that's what gets ya.
