After reading all the debates on Vegas the one thing that people don't seem to think is this. Most people live in a city for ten years and never really see it all, so your point of view is based on where you spend most of your time which is probably driving to work and where your house is located. You cannot judge a whole city when most people have never seen all of the one they live in.

I grew up in Houston, lived in Dallas and Austin. Spent time in Romania (Bucharest), Poland, Chicago and Denver. I am no stranger to densely populated cities like Bucharest but I'm not an expert so don't start asking for credentials. This is all my point of view.

When I accepted an internal transfer with my company I read this site alot. Actually my wife read probably everything on here about Vegas. So we have been here about a month and I wanted to write my first impressions before my ideas change and become clouded with time. So if you are moving here this is what you may see.

We live around Lone Mountain and my job is around Cheyenne and Simmons so you now see my reference point. We drive all over the city sometimes because I like to find things and see what there is. We are going out and exploring every weekend.

People - So far people are not as forthcoming and open and in the southern states. More than a few people here have told me this. Already a few times when I give a common courtesy and I get nothing back. It doesn't bother me. I have adjusted accordingly and now I am saving oxygen. Gotta keep green says Al Gore.

Traffic / Drivers - To me everyone drives slow. 215, 95, and elsewhere. I don't mind because I feel like I am getting places faster. Kind of like reverse psychology. They drive slow I feel I am going faster. I love this. There is an exception. 4 way stops where everyone can't decide whose turn it is. It is always my turn because they are poking about.

Illegal Immigration - A hot topic. Well I hate to disappoint but it is nowhere near the level of Texas. I mean at least here you still have people working in fast food that can speak English. Even high school kids. I was so giddy to hear an actual English speaking person. There are alot of people that La Migra could pick up at Cheyenne and Tenaya I am sure but it's not near that of Texas. I grew up in Houston and lived in Dallas for 15 years so I know what it's really like. Well there is Roberto's Taco Shop but it's supposed to be like that. Yo quiero Taco Bell?

Sex - You know I don't know what the hoopla is all about. I expected to see sex on all the signs and I only see it on the Strip. I just haven't seen as much as I expected. I'm disappointed. I want my money back.

Gambling - Everywhere. If you got any issues with gambling do NOT come here. There are slot machines everywhere. Even in the 7-11. We all know that slot machines are preprogrammed. You can get that in any book about gambling. So all chance is gone so it's no fun. Plus no one pulls the arm. They just push the button over and over. No fun in that. Snake eyes!!!

Alcohol - 24/7. In Texas we have dry counties and no liquor after 9pm and no wine beer after 2am. I'm an adult and don't need the govt. telling me when I can buy beer. I hated that about Texas.

Kids - No I didn't purposely put this section next to sex, gambling and alcohol. Hahahaha. There is alot of debate on raising kids here. We are planning to have kids so I cannot really get into this because I will get slammed with the ever useful "You will understand when you have your own" phrase. So I won't start that flame war. I can only say that in the suburbs I don't see alot of what I would think is bad influence that will warp my children. The youth of today is living in a culture of self indulgent entitilism anyways.

Weather - This one is simple. If you have never lived in a hot climate you might be a little overwhelmed by the heat. I grew up in Houston and as kids we had NO central air/heat. We had open windows and box fans. So you take 100 degrees and and add 90% humidity and tell me which is worse. Vegas or Houston. You can sleep butt naked there and you will sweat like a pig. Do pigs sweat? Good question.

Nature - The mountains are nice. They are not like in Colorado with all the trees but you can go up to Mt. Charleston to cool off and the drive is nice and there are trees. I like the desert. It's a harsh environment I know but it's really interesting if you get off the highway and into some hills. I imagine there is much more to it than meets the eye.

Cost - Texas is supposed to be cheaper and it probably is. I didnt see much difference. If you want a house in Vegas well there are plenty here. We looked at builders but there are just so many empty ones to choose from we will probably do that.

Family and Friends - All your family and friends will suddenly want to visit if you move here. No kidding. If you were the Black Sheep then that is no more my friend. You just became the golden child.

Overall the city is pretty much like any other city when you get in the suburbs. Has it's good sides and bad sides. I would say that you should visit before moving here. Don't stay on the strip unless you plan to actually drive around and look at things. So far we like it.

Oh and there are buffets at all the casinos but it's not worth the price if you ask me. I found a few $9.99 ones but I don't eat more than a plate and half unless it's shrimp then I am like Homer Simpson in the fish restaurant.

Later - Rick

Rick-love the post! Great inside, newbie points of view. One that you didn't cover and was a big thread or couple threads here is the bugs. What is your take on that? When we were visiting, we went around with a superintendent that has lived there for the last 8 or so months, he is from MI. He said he has not noticed any! NONE. He is even working on the City Center and still says nope, none. We looked at a few apts and I saw them. But...

Hahahaah That's the truth. I got a slight adjustment of pay to come here but it was enough to buy me some Jack in the Box. That's about it.

I haven't seen any bugs. We had these huge waterbugs in Houston. Let me tell you these things are huge. Giant flying roaches and if one of those landed on you someone will think you had a seizure.

I know that roaches can live in just about any environment. I will not be surprised that if they find life on Europa that it turns out to be a colony of roaches.

For the record, I will never be moving to Texas! I'm moving to Vegas from Buffalo, 90 degrees at the most in the summer, with about the same percentage humidity. Plus, DRY COUNTIES!? Who suggested that concept! What is this world coming to? Dry county, but I'm sure there are little punks running around with guns, and that apparently is ok.

It isn't now, but as I was growing up in West Virginia the whole state was dry. If you wanted to drink you could buy a fifth of booze from the state run liquor store and take it home to drink it. Dance halls and road houses sold "set-ups" (ice and mixers), and if you kept your bottle under the table out of sight, the local cops would usually leave you alone unless the owner was behind in his graft payments or had pi**ed the wrong person off. Then they looked under the table and the owner got fined. If they really wanted to get nasty you also would get fined. Every so often some legislator would try to pass a bill to make liquor by the drink legal, but the Baptists and the bootleggers would join forces to defeat the proposal. I guess they finally realized they could make more money on sin tax without doing anything, than they could on selling booze themselves, so now you can drink in West (by God) Virginia.

Once I went with the Reserves to McAllister, Okla., for training. It was a dry county. Within about 30 minutes after meeting some local young ladies downtown, we had whiskey AND beer purchased from some seedy looking characters.
