The walmart at Trop and Pecos has closed, to make way for a Super Walmart at Russell and Eastern. There seems to be some construction going on at the empty building, so hopefully it won't be vacant much longer. Nothing destroys a strip mall like Walmart moving out.

It only takes a year to earn your residency if you do it right. You can move out, work in the culinary industry as a cook or dishwasher for a year and then start at UNLV as a resident. Those hours you work are also necessary to earn a degree, I believe you need 1000 hours of experience. Look into the residency guidelines on UNLV's website.

I hear ya!
Wow! I feel like I was just there yesterday. When did it close? I used to live off of Trop and Spencer and frequent that one all of the time. Any ideas what they're buliding in it's place?

Well, it's not like an 18/19 year old can get into casinos anyway....unless she has a really good fake.

I don't know if UNLV does this also but CSN charges in state tuition during summer term for all students. If money is an issue I would recommend doing the first two years at a community college. It is definitely cheaper, usually more accommodating to your schedule, and once you graduate you'll at least have an AA/AS in something and in most cases guaranteed acceptance into a state U.

I'll make this pitch once and never mention it again unless asked. Have you looked at military service at all to get the money you need for school? I'm a Navy vet, did my four years and will start collecting my GI Bill benefits ($1100) after my first month of school. I landed a good job from the skills I learned so I also have tuition reimbursement, stable salary, and the desire to continue my education to climb the ranks. And I joined at the age of 24.

If you start fresh at 18, get out at 22, you get to start going to school at a better time in your life. You'll be of age, have more personal discipline, and at the very least you'll have better stories to tell than your peers. You'll also be able to establish residency where ever you want, just set up an PO Box or a friend's address. You'd want NV, WA, or FL anyways for no state income taxes.

All I'm saying is give it a look. If this new GI Bill legislation passes (although Bush said he'd veto it) it will be a full ride to school on top of a monthly stipend. This would be a boon to anyone participating.

it closed about a year ago, i'd be curious as to what there building there, too, maybe a swap meet? The school district could just consolidate all of their offices there, o, that would be too easy...its big enough to be converted into another elementary school, lol...

5 years ago that shopping center was the place to be for convenient shopping...

Most people that live in Vegas hardly ever go on the strip! I'm from Southern California and Vegas has all the amenities that home has.. WalMart, Target, KMart.. (However we have no Ralphs or Stater Bros.).. There are three other neighborhood malls (meaning not on the strip) and two outlet centers so shopping is just like shopping in other states.. if not better.

Most of the people I know that work in the restaurant from waiters to cooks have a looooong wait to become what they really want to become.. Nobody ever leaves those jobs because they make such great money. On the bright side, if you do get into the restaurant industry, you should make good money regardless of your postion. I know a guy who has been a Servers Assistant for 3 years.. he's waiting to be a Server, but makes a pretty good living doing what he does.

That's awesome! If I do end up going there, I'll be transferring in the fall as a Hospitality Management major. Good luck!
