Stations are definately great for the amateur or timid players. Most players are friendly and you will see a lot of regular faces. I started playing at Sunset, and then moved to the NW where I played at Santa Fe. However I hate that Sante Fe moved their poker room (not really a room since it's open to the rest of the casino with only a small wall surrounding it) to the middle of the casino floor with slot machines all around and smokers blowing their smoke over the small wall into the poker area. That defeats the purpose of a non-smoking poker room. Hopefully Aliante actually has a poker "room" with closed walls and a door.

Smoke is one of the reasons I had to quit playing poker. Muhfundsalow, a disease discovered by a famous Italian physician, was the other.

funny how the TV is a tool and how people are influenced... Casinos were getting rid of poker machines a few years ago... people think its cool again and everyone is doing it now... if you said you played poker for a living 10 years ago you were a degenerate and now its a career choice... just pointing out a fact

Coming from a "Pro" poker player, I will give you a few friendly pointers.
Try to avoid the big rooms (Bellagio, Venetian, Ceasers, Wynn, and MGM) where lots of fish get eaten live by the sharks

My personnal favorite cash games for NL 1/2 - 2/5 are :
Binions
Venetian
Planet Hollywood
Tresure Island
Southpoint
MGM
Stratusphere (Dont no if they still have one but, Ive made loads of money in this sub par room due to extremly weak play)

For bigger games I recommend:
Bellagio
Wynn

Tourny's:
Treasure Island (Headhunter)
Plantet Hollywood (Pineapples)
Noon $200 Venetian or Ceasers
Noon Orleans (Decent cheap buyin tourny)
Sahara, TI and Planet Hollywood daily tournys are good aswell

1) Find the touristy tables and get to know the locals that are grinding it out. Try to avoid getting involved in pots with the grinders. This seems to be common that all of them just try to fleece the tourists and stay out of each other's way.

2) Try playing from early evening to early morning. This is the time when the people that are losing start chasing to get their money back and the drinkers get really drunk. The very late hours of the night and into early morning, especially on the weekends, are the most profitable hours for the pros.

3) The lowest no-limits that any particular casino offers are generally the ones the clueless tourists play. Example: Bellagio 2/5nl is the lowest they have, thus it is much softer than 5/10nl. But at the Venetian, 1/2nl is the lowest, therefore their 2/5nl is not as soft as the Bellagio 2/5nl.

I think you alluded to it above, but I'd add...don't drink when playing poker, wouldn't you? When the cocktail server comes around, order coffee or coke. Let the clueless tourist get drunk and give you his money.

So...I'm going to Las Vegas this July for vacation to play some poker and I'm really glad I found this thread. I'm a poker player here in Texas and can't wait to get there to play in the Vegas casinos. I'm staying at the Sahara, so I'm really glad you mentioned here. I've been told that I should do like the sit n go touneys. Are those at the Sahara as part of the daily tournaments?

Yeah I also recommend the the Noon Venetian tourney. It's actually $150 and you get 7.5k starting in chips and the blinds go up every 40 mins.
