OP is from a small town, and should not compare big cities with rural or small towns.

It is because people here don't like to let you over. I don't personally make that maneuver, but I see it all the time. This is why I tell newbies to choose the lane they need well in advance.

Maybe it feels more scary because the roads
Are newer w/more lanes.
On the other hand is Boston w/way too many
Cars for the road. And nasty.
My main problem driving in LV (hope it gets
Better as I familiarize myself w/routes) was
That my GPS didn't "match" road/lane conditions.
And it's up to date.

After NV drivers accommodated me on the summerlin
Expressway, just decided to chill out. Let it re calibrate.
Seriously, you can be too nervous if you try to do
Everything right. Consider it sight-seeing until
You know roads in advance of the drive.

BTW - hydroplaning is like driving on ice.

The abundance of 45mph roads can make the city driving almost seem like a highway at times. You have to be assertive.
