the water here is pretty hard....you'll get deposits on anything you let air dry. you can definitely taste the minerals.

water softeners are nice, but pbby not a must if you are diligent about drying things and taking care of buildup on you faucets, etc.

i don't have a softener (i rent a house), but i pbby would if i owned. i have a water cooler at my house that i use primarily for my drinking water.

Water softeners are pretty much standard here as is Reverse Osmosis. You can live with it but it is tough. Probably 80% of the houses over 300K have both. At the low end 50%.

Cost $400 to $1000. Maybe $10-20 a month for salt. Depends on which one and how big a unit...

I just left Las Vegas and have noticed the difference in how soft my sheets are here, eventhough I did have a water softener in Las Vegas. When I replaced the unit I had in Vegas it was $900.

Let's put it this way,

my skin doesn't itch anymore and I came from a place that if you DIDN'T have a water softner you itched.

My sheets and towels are line dried and I don't have a problem with softness....

of course, this is moving from somewhere else that had hard water.

I live in an apartment...don't have any softner system.
