Hey everybody... I'm a 24 y/o college grad living in New York City right now and I'm interested in spending May-August (or June-August... not positive yet) in Las Vegas. I'm keeping my apartment in NYC, but I had some general questions regarding vegas life, etc:

*First, I've been talking to an apartment complex - http://www.haydenpropertieslasvegas.com/thefalls/default.asp (broken link) - regarding short term furnished rentals and it looks like it's going to work out. Is anyone familiar with this area... the address is 3825 S Cambridge. How far exactly is it from the strip? Is it safe? From the map I can VAGUELY remember the area around Hard Rock from my last visit...

*Living at that address, would a car be necessary? There's a 99% chance I'm going to be working at one of the major casinos on the strip. Being a New Yorker, I don't have a car. I mean, I could buy a cheap used one if I HAD too, but if it's not necessary I'd rather not - especially just for 3 or 4 months.

*Anyone familiar with the job market for bartenders and waiters? The bar I work at in NYC has a restaurant in the MGM Grand I could work for... but I wouldn't mind seeing if I could play the field a little bit. Anyone have experience in that industry?

Thanks... and if you have any other info that could perhaps be useful to me and my short term Vegas move, I'd appreciate it!

Charles

Cambridge is a little sketchy, I've driven by that apt. complex before, it looked nice, but a few streets to the north, Sierra Vista is known as one of the most dangerous streets in the valley.

cambridge is a VERY bad area, I would definitely find somewhere else to live!! (It's not within walking distance to the Strip either)

Personally I wouldn't move in that area. It's not very good at all. I'm sure you could find something in a nicer area that isn't any further.

Need a car? It depends on how you plan to get around the city. It's not like being in NY where public transportation is everywhere and isn't nasty. In that area you are not necessarily in walking distance to the strip, especially in 100 degree temperatures - unless you want to arrive to work needing to take a shower from sweating. If you plan to take a bus, keep in mind that you will be waiting in the sun in 100 degree temperatures for the bus (their "shelters" are pathetic, dirty, vandalized most of the time). Also, the bus isn't so safe - it's mostly poor people that take it. I've seen the people boarding the bus and I wouldn't ride anywhere with them.

I'm with the other posters- Cambridge is a marginal area at best, you're not within walking distance of the strip, and public transportation in LV sucks. While you may be able to get to work via bus, what about food shopping, going out at night/on weekends, etc? It's not like NYC where a few subway hops put you anywhere you need to go.

Also, you may find it tough to get a good bartending job without having an "in"- Vegas is still a big "who you know" town, and a lot of the good-paying service jobs go to who pays the most to get them. For a short term gig, I'd stick with the sure thing you have at the MGM and make sure that the pay there will cover your living expenses. Otherwise, you might be in for a long, poverty-filled summer.

I'm curious too- why do you want to spend a summer in Vegas anyway? Without a car especially, I can't see it being a very fun experience.....

I agree. Not only is the summer heat pretty much intolerable unless you are in air conditioning, you will be missing a lof the best things of Vegas. Some of the greatest places are not found on the strip or in walking distance from that area... places like Red Rock, the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, Mount Charleston, etc. If you are going to do a summer in Vegas make sure to have a car that has good working air conditioning. Make it worth your while and see the strip and everything cool off the strip! There are some great day trips from there as well (Death Valley, etc.).
