...to live lined up! However, I am all about taking risks.

I am just wondering if anyone has any advice for me before taking this move... I hear to stay AWAY from the North side, but then I hear that is the "good" side. If anyone can shed some light on this I'd appreciate it!

I am in the cellphone industry - which I love - just wondering how it is by you all that live there??? Lots of T-Mobiles, Verizons, ect. on every corner???

And, how much should I expect to pay for rent? I hear it is quite steep. In Wisconsin I am paying about $450/month with free heat, water ect and about $20 in electric. I know I will be paying quite a bit more than that (reading some other posts) but is it possible to afford these places with the jobs??? I am assuming the pay rate/tips are nice!

Thanks in advance everyone

Sorry to rain on your parade, but this is NOT the place to move without a job or place to stay. I sure hope you are going to come and visit and check things out before you take the plunge. Yes, of course we have lots of Cell phone stores, but I don't think you will make enough to cover rent on your own working at one.

Cell phone sales reps make abt $9.50 per hr + commissions and commissions ain't runnin worth squat right now....in case you hadn't noticed, the economy is down.......so expect nothing [except higher rent then you have]

sammacmn - thanks much, good luck to you as well, when are you moving???

And as far as someone raining on my parade by telling me I won't make it, no such thing. I am ready to take the plunge and have no worries. People all over the world MOVE without a dollar to their name.. No job, no place to stay. It adds to the adventure. I am just trying to get some more insight before I leave Wisconsin. the more knowledge I get from you guys who know everything there is to know, the better off I will be! THANKS AGAIN
...
I have a large sum of cash to last me over a year without a job. I am 100% convinced I will get a job within my first month there. Easily as a cocktail waitress which I heard tips are great.

hey Nikki26:

b4 your last post, i was going to try to dissuade you from moving w/ no plan. but since it sounds like you have a good sized nest egg (and therefore a plan), i'll just say GL w/ your search.

but really make the effort to find something fast...any job will be a good place to start as you'll need references and word of mouth to move up the food chain. you'll also be surprised how fast $ can go here compared w/ WI (i did my graduate work in MKE). i dunno how easy cocktail waitress jobs are to come by...seems to me there have been several threads here on that in the past...might want to do a search for them.

again, best of luck.

Good luck, my husband and I will be there next month. We have been planning the move for 2 years and have made 2 preliminary trips out there and I am still scared s***less but excited at the same time. We don't have jobs set up or an apt yet but we have enough dough to set us in an extended stay hotel for a while during our search and family in the area if we get really desperate. Everyone is saying that the job search is getting tough, I have a last ditch option out there that I am a shoe in for if I can't find my dream job. My best advice, which I'm sure I heard from someone else here, take the first job you can get even if you know you'll hate it cause it pays the bills while you're still lookin for the dream.

oh and PS...don't let anyone discourage you, a positive attitude is sometimes the one thing that sets you apart from the other applicants. If you believe you can make it happen then you can!

Some tips:

1. Get a local phone number and address right away. It's nearly impossible to get a job without these things.

2. The north is a mixed bag - it depends on which area you're looking at. The northeast can be sketchy...this is the area that people tend to avoid. North central (Aliante, etc.) is a nice enough area, but zoned for poor schools. The northwest is excellent overall. Also look at Summerlin, the southwest, and Green Valley.

3. Housing in Vegas is a bit more expensive than housing in WI, but the overall costs of living should be about the same (NV doesn't have a state income tax, for example, and you typically don't have to pay for parking).

Well certain parts of the North Side is bad, whereas the city is actively trying to change that area. The plus is that the housing is less expensive than say Summerlin or The Lakes.

There are a lot of cell phone stores here and Vegas is a hot bed for cell-phone use.

For you rent question, you can expect to pay for a "decent" place in the range of 800-1200 in rent. If you are trying to pay 600 for a place, you might want to look at another state. No offense to anyone living in a 600 a month place but it might carry a lot of violence and crime. Around the Boulder highway area, you will find cheaper areas to live. In Summerlin, The Lakes, Greenvalley and near Blue Diamond you can almost forget paying that amount.

To be honest, if you're working as a cell-phone salesman it may be tough for you to have a decent living here. Yes you may be able to cover the rent, but Nevada Power just increased their rates, food is expensive and gas is high.

Anything is possible it just takes some planning. Go to www.clarkcountyrentals.com they have a nice list of homes for rent. Or try this link to Housing helpers.com Link

Dont be so sure. You might beable to land a job at a lower rung casino--after you get your gaming, and tam cards. Most of the strip casinos, and many "higher end" locals casinos want experienced cocktail waitresses. If you do go that route--starting at a lesser casino dont expect tips to be that great.

Good luck
