The month was awful. So all the boys are scrambling to fix. Let us see what they come up with.

It is going to be an interesting year. And the next one may be even more interesting.

Hold the crepe for a while though...this particular body is very good at recovering. If it is down 50% in six month we should worry.

Note by the way that the local joints were down worse than the strip...

Sorry, folks misintepreted the point of my post. I am not saying things are just fine.

My beef is with the apparent bias or just plain bad math in the story. Why is it that Vegas is bashed for filling hotels at $90/night and it's OK that other major cities are running at $50/night. What the heck is their point with that comparison?

The article appears to be trying to say that no one wants to come to Vegas and that is why gaming is down. If you look at the data, people are coming to Vegas. They just aren't spending the money they do bring on gambling.

i think to get the gamblers cooking, you need to drop the room prices and go heavy on the comps... 4yrs ago i stayed downtown at the Club hotel for $13 including breakfast, used to always get the free rooms... boy has that changed..

Yea but what did it cost you in gambling losses to get all those comps?

But your right. To get the gamblers cooking you need to drop the high room prices and couph up more in comps. Hell most of those food or drink comps cost the casinos pennies anyway.

Well I grant you that. The city-to-city comparison is pretty pointless.

As for the slowdown - if it's temporary, then it's just a bad year and they'll make up for it in 2009. But the way the economy is going that's becoming less and less likely.

Hint: heating oil is going up 47% this winter, natural gas is going up 42% (per PBS Nightly Business Report). That's massive sticker shock, folks, and for a commodity people need to survive. It's a foregone conclusion that they're going to have even bigger troubles starting around October as the temperature drops, and even less money to spend on a trip to Vegas. Trying not to freeze to death has a way of focusing your priorities.

So maybe 2010?

Ya Even in New Mexico the Majority of the Indian casinos are losing revenues like they never have before.

One problem is the gasoline prices are so high people are conserving money and being more careful what they spend it on.

I have a friend that lives in Lincoln, CA and he is right next to Thunder Valley Indian Casino. He says its like a ghost town in there, even the bingo is slow. I guess its really not just NV casinos, but others too.
