The only crime I've ever experienced in Las Vegas happened on Tropicana between UNLV and the MGM. This was in about '02.

There is literally like, nothing on trop between unlv and mgm. The airport on one side, and a new strip mall that wasnt even open 2 months ago; me thinks you make up stories

Indeed it is a large distance. I attempted it simply to see if walking to casinos was feasible. I don't know how the poster above walked to In & Out Burger all the time.

The event in question happened just near the edge of the airport, on the UNLV side. Nothing a CCW won't solve if/when I move to the area.

*also, perhaps we are confused on what "the area" around UNLV constitutes. In my mind, I am thinking 3 city blocks... not just the strip malls directly across the street from campus. Those will usually be good.

So glad this thread was resurrected. I recently took a trip to an severely economically depressed and drug laden part of Pittsburgh to help out a family member's local school. Talk about ghetto. I never felt that unsafe in ANY part of Las Vegas and I've been all over this valley. The people there in that side of Pittsburgh were no joke. I take back any negative thing I have ever said about Las Vegas being a "ghetto". It is cake compaired to where I was. Area of UNLV? I'd live there in a heartbeat if given the choice between that place and where I was in Pittsburgh.

UNLV....I just wish that area was more university-like. It is a bit, but not really!

As for what most students do (I don't think anyone else answered this yet)...UNLV is something like 90% commuter. A lot of people either live at home or rent apartments elsewhere in the valley.

I know what you mean... i moved here from a college town, and I kind of miss that community that pops up around a university. I wish there was more university/community interaction...
