Well after reading all the wonderful stories I can't say I'm excited. However, I do think I'm prepared I have my Social Security Card & Birth Certificate and a book ready. lol Do I have to get the smog test before going to the DMV?? Are all smog tests pretty much the same? I usually see them as I drive and they seem to range from 17.99 - 25+. Is there a difference or does the DMV accept them all? I am financing my car through my CU in Ohio do I need to bring that paperwork?? I have Statefarm Insurance from Ohio do I need to switch it over before going? I'm so dreading Nevada rates. I called a local Statefarm and she told me 175 a month, I was paying 98 in Ohio. I think I slipped into a state of shock!! lol I haven't called any other places yet. I'm not ready

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

Do the smog test first. Even if you have to drive a bit I would go to the DMV out on the North end of Decatur, between 9 & 11:30 A.M. You will be able to walk right in, and a very short line

My husband just went and got plates for our car. When he got there, he texted me that he was behind about 100 people just waiting to get a number. After that, he thought it went smoothly. He said they have a pretty good system-so that should tell you how bad it is in MI. It did take him a while though.

We did get new insurance-Allstate. It was the cheapest for us because I have a stupid accident on my record-which I should have just paid for out of my pocket-would have been cheaper. Farmers was higher for me. You got a great rate, airics!

He did not get a smog test because when we checked online it said that you didn't need one for the first two registrations of a new vehicle.

He also did his license. Total cost was almost $400.!!! Yuck.

Good luck with that, I was sick that day so I didn't go which means I will be doing it soon for my license.

I will give them a call. Do you think it will matter that the home I own isn't in Nevada?

Everyone feels bad for you. We all had to go though it. Dont plan on anything else to do that day. Your whole day will be devoted to all the stress that can possibly be layed upon you. Your whole day will be devoted to the DMV...who will treat you like a piece of meat in a slaughter house.

It dont matter what paper work you bring with you, you will need more and more and more and more. Even if you have everything the last 100 people on line had, they will invent something else just so you will have to come back again and do it all over again.

With the big confusing lit up board of numbers always blinking, if some one screams out BINGO!!! it's just a joke but people always do it.

To afford the NV registration I would recomend taking out a home equity loan but no one has equity in their homes anymore.

If the old battalax at the counter gives you a hard time you will just have to swallow it. Even if you tell her how ugly she is, she is so immune to hearing it that she will just attempt a smirky smile and continue on.

If you get bored and find yourself trying to listen in on conversations going on nearby, forget it unless you know Spanish. With the mobs and mobs of Spanish speaking in the DMV it makes us all wonder why so few of them have license plates out on the roads. No license plate = no registration, no insurance and probably no green card. Thats ok. Its all in a days survival here.

Good luck to you my friend. Your gona need a little humor to get through that gauntlet of bureaucratic disaster.

Actually we have been going to the DMV on Decatur & 215, we must be just getting lucky. But the last couple of times we have been in and out within 30 minutes. That includes registering 2 vehicles, and renewing our licenses.

Make sure you get the smog first if you car is more then 2 years old.

although the poster didn't ask about encountering Spanish at the DMV, desertsun had to bring it up anyway...
