I'm not sure if this is the right place to post my questions if it's not please guide me where to post it.
I'm planing to relocate from CA to probably Las Vegas or Boise which I can afford a house and turn the garage into business work shop.I do some car parts rebuilding and will do most of my business online.my questions are
1.Is it legal and will I be able to register the kind of home business I do .

2.there will be some noise from compressor and some other tools ,will I be at odd with neighbors and how can I solve it (bigger lot size ?).

3.can I have walk in customers or delivery service if I want to expand my business? (I won't work on cars so no cars packed in front of garage)

Thanks in advance for your replies .

Whatever you do, don't buy a home in a HOA...and get real friendly with your neighbors, because you're going to need to.

Honestly...and I'm not trying to be nasty or anything love, just being real honest.

But, I wouldn't that located in the house next to me or on my street....

Good luck to you!

I vote with you momx2 momx2 I already have one in my neighborhood and it took quite some time to get him in line.....but we did....I don't care WHAT you do inside your own garage [door closed] but if it spills into the yard and makes the neighborhood look like dawg droppings, we gonna have a problem.

There is a lot to consider. Even with an HOA, you still need to be zoned to do that kind of work - and light industrial facilities are often placed into a different zoning category than other home-based businesses like beauty salons or attorney's offices. There may be environmental restrictions to check on as well, involving the use and disposal of solvents and petroleum products. And the noise could be a major factor to the neighbors. You might try contacting the city government in the cities you are considering and finding out if it's feasible to do what you want to do before you spend much time looking for a house.

If getting a genuine, properly zoned shop isn't an option, you can set up with one of the "virtual office" places - there's plenty of them out here. For one or two hundred per month, you get someplace to hang your business license, mail receiving, a receptionist, conference room use, etc. No actual office, though.

Regardless of which way you go setting up the business, if you want to do this work in your garage, you're going to want to be on very good terms with your neighbors and in an area with no HOA (haha) or a very lenient one.

Also, have you considered how hot it gets in the garages out here during the summer? Unless you seal it off, insulate and air condition it, you might find that the temps are going to be unbearable.

Good luck with your venture (from another home based business owner ) and welcome to Las Vegas!

You might well get away with it in the half acre areas. An acre would be better. They tend to be laissez faire. That however is upward from 350K. Many will have suitable shops.

Note that the municipality will come after you just like an HOA if the noise annoys the neighbors.

Move out to Pahrump (About 60 miles outside of Vegas)

Most of us out here have never had to deal with an HOA... and shockingly enough our properties do not look like trailer trash.. its nice to really own your property unlike an HOA where they tell you what to do with your property. Yeah, there are some nasty areas in town.. but the street I live on looks very neat and tidy.. and no HOA telling us to keep it that way.

We have a guy on our street who does simple car and small engine repair.. business license and all.. no issues.. he is not messy.. his garage is AMAZING btw.. very neat well stocked and pretty much he can fix almost anything. Would rather have him on my street than an HOA telling me how to live.. ANY day of the week
