I'm coming to Vegas in the spring semester as a student at UNLV.

What should I expect? Any words of wisdom? Any tips?

I'm a very serious student so don't worry I'm not going to mess up academics lol.

vegas to me really isn't a big city, but i love the urban environment of where unlv is located...are you going to be staying on campus?

we dont have the skyscrapers, rowhouses, or the vibrant center city or historical places of Philadelphia...

To me a big city is anything over 1 million. Like most cities in the West, it is sprawl and you get a lot more room than most big cities in the East. Its all about preference.. some like it, some don't.

Where are you from? How small? Las Vegas has a small town feel in some respects, but it is a lot larger in area than much more populated cities. As a city it has grown horizontally, not vertically. We call the entire Valley, or metropolitan area, Las Vegas, but it is actually three cities, plus three or four unincorporated townships, all run together as if it were one city. Unless you know the boundaries you'll never know the difference. But that's why we keep referring to the population as 2 million when within the actual city limits of Las Vegas it is probably about 500,000.

Las Vegas has more conveniences than most cities being a 24 hour town, and the requirement that if you build something you have to include enough free parking for your costumers. When we travel we can't get over the fact that there's never any parking, and what there is they have the gall to charge their customers for. I refuse to stay in hotels in big cities that charge for parking. We also seem to have more convenience stores, gas stations, drug stores, spas, dentists, fast food restaurants, whatever, in convenient locations. Our streets are all wide, usually four to seven lanes, or more, and the town is basically laid out in a N-S, E-W grid, that is easily identified by major cross streets to help keep you from getting lost. Thank goodness the early city fathers didn't use the Mormon system of street numbering because I've never figured that out.

We get over 100,000 visitors a day, 365 days a year, all expecting the finest entertainment in the world. That same entertainment is available to us locals too, but we have the added benefit of frequently running into the stars out shopping and dining and acting like the rest of us. The result is we get very bored with it all, but we also turn into snobs and feel superior to everyone else in all the other cities in the world. After a while, anywhere you go, including NYC, LA, Chicago, or Podunk will just be boring, and you'll be anxious to get back home to Las Vegas and civilization.

Just kidding.

It is usually more exciting than we let on, and much more so than most other cities of similar size.

I don't know - ask on the New York City board.

Las Vegas to me feels like a giant suburb with the glittering modern Strip and a run-down old Downtown in the center. It just doesn't have a real urban core that draws people in like New York or San Francisco, though that may change over the next ten years or so.

LV is the entertainment capital of the world? Get a clue. On a "bad' day, NYC has 50 Broadway shows, 10 sporting events, the Met, Lincoln Center, and venues for EVERY touring show, be it, major, or up-and-coming. LV is the "knock-off" CAPITAL of the world.
