Good luck with your move. I too am planning to move to Vegas. Next year hopefully. My boyfriend and I love it there. I have been researching apartments, condos to rent, areas...I received a relocation package in the mail with all kinds of great info. We're going to make a trip out there sometimes in April to actually go look at apartments and pick one. I'm looking forward to the move and cannot wait. But I am still nervous about finding a job. My boyfriend is going to transfer within the company he works so he'll have one.

jobs are not easy to find....BUT....if you have some qualifications and a lot of perservearance they are there.....probably the most important thing that MOST employers look for is stability.....the job can be learned....but if you have a history of 3-4 months on a job then move on.....it ain't likely to happen.

If you have a little money put aside to keep you for at least two months then come on down. When I moved here I knew less than nothing about the place. It took about a month to find a job which is about average. I had juice but the job I found I got on my own. That was 44 years ago, and although I have been out of work a time or two I survived. I've known dozens of people who, like me, moved here on advise of friends without having a job, or knowing anything about the place. In fact, I'd bet that 1.9 of the 2 million people here did pretty much the same thing, so it's no different now except for being 10 times larger with 10 times more opportunity. If you are determined you'll do just fine. But you won't find the peace of mind that you're looking for to make your decision on this or any forum. Most of what you hear is either negative or overly cautious. Apparently you had the guts to move to Boston from Europe, so what's the big deal? You will be better off here than anywhere, believe me. Oh, yeah, wear lots of sun screen, and don't go in the sun too often. You will burn a lot faster here than you would in Boston. Tans only look nice when you're young. Wrinkles and skin cancer are hideous when you're old.

Las Vegas has a ton of job fairs each year. Some sectors are hurting, i.e. real estate related and construction industries. However, being bilingual you could be a sought after asset for the casinos and banking industries. Connections are the KEY in Las Vegas. Work part time or full-time, any hours they give you, make friends, have a LOCAL (702) phone number and network as much as you can and you can do it! As far as living somewhere, everyone has an opinion which side of town is best. I personally live 5 minutes off the strip because I like being close to things. Others hate it. It's personal preference. You can go to www.spotcrime.com and it shows a map and every call reported. It's a great site. Also, use a realtor for find rental properties. Costs nothing to you, they do the legwork. This should also protect you somewhat for avoiding renting a home in foreclosure. Hope this helps. www.trish-coleman.com

Well, your post was good until you self plugged yourself with your realtor website link at the end....

We have other realtors on this board who refrain from doing so...

Well actually worse than that. The crime site cited does not and has never worked. They appear to be using a feed from LVMPD but it is not correct.

Way off on the heavy crime areas.

For details on a location you can go to...

CrimeView Community Incident Map

Unfortunately that works only in Metro which is everywhere but NLV and Henderson. NLV and Henderson have sites that you can access but they are difficult to interpret.

The other place is my crime by zip code at...

Crime in Las Vegas

That is actually a compendium of the Metro, Henderson and NLV sites sorted by zip code. Good for an overview of where to live and where to be cautious.

Default Then vegas is for you!

Four years ago a friend of mine moved here from the bay area, he was 20. Got a job as a hotel desk agent at one of the smaller Hotels off the strip. Started UNLV. A year later got a job at one of the big hotels on the strip. Now at 24 earns $17 and will graduate with degree in political science in December. The hotel industry is still a good prospect. But get a front desk gig, or doorman, or something like that NOT house keeping. Anyway you should do good.

I've been living in Boston for about 11 yrs. now. Before I came to Boston in 98' I was living in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegowina where I was born. Bosnia is in Eastern Europe and Boston is northeast of US. While I do enjoy my life in Boston I would like to move to Vegas for number of reasons.

I was in Vegas only once. Stayed at the Luxor for 3 days and that was it. Those 3 days convinced me that living on the East Coast is absolutely crazy.

I have a lot of reasons to move to Vegas but my #1 reason is the weather.
I love that dry, desert heat with low humidity. Here in Boston we already need heat. Days in October are chilly and cold and nights get even worse. Summer time we get 2 months of decent summer and even those 2 months can be bad with rain and extreme humidity. I won't even talk about Mosquitoes.

I don't have a plan when or where I would move. I'm financially not ready to leave yet but I'm working on that right now.

My question would be - due to our economy being really bad right now how hard is to get a job ??

My education background isn't that great, just a HS diploma - but I would be willing to continue school. I'm only 24 yrs. old.

All help would be highly appreciated.

Default What do you do for living

I agree with most of the post's. Vegas is not cheap or freindly. To rent anywhere nice you need good credit, and income. App fees run 30 to 50 bucks and you can fail, no refund. If you are a hottie, good looking babe, it will help as sex sells in Las Vegas. But you will still need at least 4000 thousand bucks. It is really not a fun place to live, there is no community, hard to make friends. You should ask yourself what you are looking for in life, visit some other places. Vegas is hard up right now like everywhere else. If you want college then this is not the place, employers don't work around school, it is a federal min wage state so no skilled workers make 8.00 bucks
The union is flooded with people so, it is not like it was. I would say think again. Yes living on the east coast is ****ty, try florida not vegas for sun. You sound very juvenile be carefull about las vegas.
