New member here. i've been enjoying reading most of the posts, you have a great forum going.
I'm going to be moving early next year to LV and I'm a huge beach addict.
planning on driving to cali once a month.
What is the closest beach in Cali from LV? in both distance and time. i ran a quick google maps search and it seems its about 5 hours to the closest point.
What's your experience on this?
cheers
DH

The BEACH at Mandalay Bay Casino....

just kidding,

(It really is a beach, with sand trucked in from Cali, waves, etc.)

We've gone to Santa Monica, it's just OK and about 4 1/2 hours drive with stops...usually we head to San Diego...any one of the beaches in La Jolla, Carlsbad, Cardiff, Torrey Pines State Park...are good. Our favorite is in Encinitas..Moonlight Beach. Drive is about 5 1/2-6 hours, with stops and not speeding.

I'm gonna tell you now...that drive is brutal! Cali traffic is bad, we leave and come home in the wee morning hours to avoid it all...

Have fun and good luck with your move to Las Vegas...

When you go where do you stay? Do you stay with friends?

I would love to take a drive there, we don't know anyone there so we would have to get a room. Just trying to figure out what would be our best option. Also, if we go for the weekend, what else is worth checking out? My daughter is obsessed with the whole CA thing and she has never been there. I don't know if LA would be better or SD.

SANDIEGO....LA doesn't even exist in comparison.

We have stayed in TONS of places and never had a bad one....

BEACH.....ZOO....BALBOA PARK...OLD TOWN....LaJOLLA....etc. etc. etc.

San Diego IS California.....the rest is LA.

Huntington Beach is a pretty big public beach one of my favorites, something about it's location causes waves to break pretty close together so maybe not for beginners, cornado del mar isn't far either, it's a smaller public beach, therefore more crowded, but waves are more forgiving. They're both about 4 1/2 hours away. Seal beach and Laguna are nice, I'm not sure if Laguna has pubic access, but start at Seal beach and head north on the Pacific Coast Highway and hit all the beaches. seeya

We found Moonlight Beach in Encintas and we stay in the Days Inn right down the street from it, right off 76 I think it is...

It's not at all luxurious a hotel, but we only sleep there and it's reasonable enough and near some stores, . We use it as our base for the beach, Old Town San Diego (google it kimba...I love it there) downtown Encinitas and Carlsbad, Disney and Magic Mountain, Knotts Berry Farm (further away near Anaheim)...when we take the kids.

I just don't like anything pertaining to LA...so unless we go to the Santa Monica Pier, we keep away from there...

Doing a trip like that from Las Vegas is nice once in a while, don't know if I'd do it once a month from here in Las Vegas like the OP stated...

I guess I'm getting old and my tolerance level is diminishing...

LOL! I am quite sure my daughter would love to check out Laguna Beach. She is so into those kind of things. I try to tell her it is not all it is on TV.

MomMom, thanks for the info. I do not need anything fancy, same thing-just a base spot. I would rather spend my money elsewhere. I will definitely google some of those areas and try to put together a fun weekend, before my husband goes on OT.

The only reason I even mention LA is because my daughter is star struck. She would love to see the stars on the sidewalk and Rodeo Drive and probably the Hollywood sign. I can live without all of that. Pictures are good enough for me!

(Didn't mean to hijack this thread, sorry about that)

you all live in the GREATEST country in the entire frickin world, despite all your problems, all your complaints, all your flaws. they all pale in comparison to the rest of the world, they are nothing when weighed against your incredible greatness. you need to wake up and realise how incredible your country is.
