Myself and my wife moved from Northern Virginia (Ashburn) to Summerlin about 2 months ago. Our girls are elementary age and the school that they go to is wonderful. Vegas, like anywhere else has its bad areas that you want to stay out of. So if you are strongly considering the move, look to areas such as Summerlin, Henderson, Southwest Vegas and Green Valley. The name of the girls school is Givens elementary, the staff is very helpful and there are alot of after school activities for the kids. Safekey is the after school program and you pay only when you use it. It costs 7 dollars per child for 3 hours. Also at most of the casinos there is a hourly daycare called KidQuest. We use it when we want to have some alone time. Kids can stay there for a max of 5 hours and they close at 1am. We have adjusted and love the weather, in Virginia I suffered from allergies, but here is this dry climate I have had no problems. good luck

I know the school system leaves something to be desired, but my understanding is that schools in Summerlin are nice and that there are good (albeit expensive) Catholic schools as well. Is it the seediness? The crime? I have concerns about my son hitting high school with easy access to all kinds of vices, but that's prety far down the road.

Can anyone with young kids make me feel better about Vegas?
I believe it was about six months ago, at the school near my home, in Summerlin on Alta Drive, a child was shot to death while he was walking home from school. It was a drive by shooter also from the same school.

There for who knows where it is safe any more?!

I know some college kids that go to UNLV and they go out way too much (of course). I've heard that younger students like in jr. high and high school aren't in great shape either (crimes and violence). But I suppose it's like that in nearly all cities.
