Does anyone know of an online database where all the old Las Vegas Casino commercials can be accessed from the 1970s-1980s (online or elsewhere, preferably online)? I lived in Las Vegas during the days of GL Vitto and his fantastic overnight casino commercials (like for the Castaways Casino on the Strip) and just loved watching those sorts of things -- especially when GL did those commercials in his referee outfit.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Jeff

Oh man, I remember that! I'd love to see those again! I'm gonna hunt around the internet, there's gotta be something out there on somebody's website...

Thank you for that site MomMom. It sure brought back some good memories. For a long time I have been sorry I didn't take or participate in many pictures in the good old days. Not to show off or drop names, but just to jar my own memories once in a while. I always said my pix were in my head. But little did I realize that medium had a shelf-life.

jeffreyk, I doubt that you'll find those old commercials unless GL himself had somehow kept a copy. Generally speaking, it would have been way too expensive for him to buy the tapes, and the station probably would have missed it if he snitched them. We used very expensive, very huge, 2 inch video tape in those days and they came on very large reels, making storage a problem too. And even then the technology to play them doesn't even exist today except in the Museum of Broadcasting. Then there would be the problem of who has them now that he is gone, plus the fact that there wouldn't be much demand to see them again except for a few of us old timer nostalgia buffs. But the fact is, in those days, 99% of the time we recorded over the old spots and reused the same tapes for next week's shows at all the local stations. I'd be very surprised if anyone has any old tapes from the 60's and 70's. I personally never kept anything but some of my wife's news stories and those were mostly from the 80's. They are probably ruined from being in hot garages for so long even if I had something to play them on. Most of that was on 3/4 inch, another obsolete format. Recording technology has changed so much in 30+ years, and it changed several times over, so that now even BETA and VHS is hard to find, let alone 3/4 inch cassette or 2 inch reel to reel. It's possible that Ch 8 could have some archives as they are pretty good at stuff like that, but I seriously doubt it. I don't think 13 would have kept anything knowing how they are. We taped some of his stuff at Ch-3 for a short while if I remember correctly, and I know that's all gone.

Buzz123,

Thanks for the fantastic insight on this topic. Of course, it's disappointing to hear about all that lost footage but it doen't suprise me in the least. I appreciate your insight; and thanks again.

Jeff

Default Old Las Vegas

11-30-13

I just found this site. I am a 60 yr. old dinosaur, now living up here in Wasilla, Alaska (Yes, THAT Wasilla!). Originally, born and raised in Fairbanks. We left and moved to Las Vegas, in 1958. I attended Valley H.S., graduating in 1971. I then attended UNLV, graduating with a B.S., in 1975.
I sincerely miss the 'old' Las Vegas!!! And the 'old' Strip!!! I don't give three hoots about Steve Wynn, his ilk and what they've done! Anyone who lived in Las Vegas in the '50's, '60's, and '70's knows exactly what I mean.
I do enjoy perusing the threads and posts on this site.
Don't know how I ever put up with those 100 degree plus summers. But, of course, it's 20 below zero, here, right now.
I wish you all we'll.

Jerry

I know this is an older topic, but was anything ever found? Last night, I started hearing the old Silver Slipper song from Vitto's sports show. I cannot find it, at all. However, if any of you ever come back to this forum, or came across anything, I would appreciate a share! I am going to reach out to the fellas at KDWN, because they seem to have some Las Vegas sports history, :-)

Is Vitto the same host on the live from the Stardust sports talk show KDWN use to air in the 80's and early 90's.

G.L. was the goofy one. His brother Ron did serious news and sports before going into real estate. I believe both have passed. You can find different stories about broadcasting in Las Vegas in the old days on FB under Las Vegas Radio History and other Las Vegas pages.
