Area is fine. One corner is North Shore, another Summerlin Pueblo. Other two are middle middle class neighborhoods. All services are pretty much available. Some small crime on the Arterials but true of all commercial areas. Good restaurants.

I'm moving to LV to recover financially, and get back on my feet. (A year or two at most) $900 studio apts, and making barely above minimum wage is making Cali impossible. Not really worried about crime, I was born and raised in East Oakland during the wild 1980's early 90's, and lived in South Central since Jan of 09'. I am comfortable in any environment, hood or otherwise. But my kids (14 and 8) will be out for weekends, summer etc. so it would be nice to find in a halfway decent, yet affordable neighborhood ($600-700 2br).

This thread has been pretty informative so far, but any additional info would be appreciated...

(Native Nevadan here)

1) Anywhere along Twain other than the areas two miles on either side of The Strip
2) Decatur & Flamingo area
3) East on Bonanza before you get to Sunrise Mountain
4) A small section of North Las Vegas on its SE side
5) Most of the area where the weekly motels are on Boulder Highway

Basically, if you drive around the valley and see either a number of older vacant homes or homes with bars on all of the windows,it's safe to assume that the crime rate in that area is pretty high. However, given its size Las Vegas' violent crime rate is relatively low in comparison to other cities around its population or larger.

Sorry we work out of an office on Twain. It is also the location of the office of my dental surgeon. It is a very nice and not in the least unsafe area. And I would not sweat a lot living near Decatur and Flamingo. It is lower middle class perhaps but not unsafe.

You have been gone too long.

I dunno, LVOC. I had my first real experience with crime near Flamingo and Decatur the other night.

I'd add that the Arville / Penwood areas and the area behind the Strat are pretty bad, plus anything with a letter street, especially D street.

And a few years ago a high school kid got shot to death in the middle of Summerlin.

Anecdotes, even multiple ones do not add up to statistics.

You can have a single incident anywhere...does not make the area dangerous.

Probably the worst crime against children I know of occurred in an Amish area in rural PA. Do you think that turns rural PA into a high crime area?

Naw, it's not anecdotal. Metro is deploying more officers to the area because of the recent rise in assaults, etc.

The Neighborhood Gateway Project is focusing on one neighborhood gateway zone, bordered by Interstate 15, Decatur Boulevard, Spring Mountain Road and Tropicana Avenue. That area has a disproportionate amount of crime, Seebock said, in certain pockets, qualifying them as “micro hot spots.

New program focuses on increasing police presence in crime

Interesting article, I'm glad to see Metro using some proactive tactics...are all 9 micro hot spots within that area? I was a bit confused about that.

Honestly, Metro needs to really turn itself around as a whole in my opinion if they want to establish trust and cooperation from the community in general. I know they have a difficult job to do but so does law enforcement in Houston and not once have I ever been treated poorly by an officer here. Vegas was a whole different story pretty much all but one interaction with Metro was an absolute nightmare and these were simple non moving violations.
Completely ridiculous.

I had no idea the problems were increasing in that area but it seems like anywhere with that many apartments will have more than its fair share of crime.

I was there late last year.
And unless The Boulevard Mall area has DRASTICALLY improved since Thanksgiving 2013, I'd limit my stay in the area.
I'll stand by my assessment, thanks.
