Interesting. Can't say any other the other top-5 would be on anyone's immediate list, which maybe puts this in perspective.

US News would seem to be above it, but I see lists like this frequently on the internet (top restaurants, vacation spots, etc..) and I can't help but think for it basically being paid for advertisements.

But Henderson is a great place. Lots to do, lot of chain restaurants but then you have the Strip. And the weather is great. Plus, housing is getting pretty affordable again.

Apparently, Billings Montana, is on anyone's retirement list.

Yep...about 100,000 people to be exact, the 259th fastest growing city in America. I guess the word is out.

way too many chain restaurants, it makes the quality of food in surrounding independently owned places like crap...

I agree with that assessment. But there are some decent places, won't compete with the big cities known for great little places like NY, Chicago, etc... But retirees love those chains. Affordable and some are decent, although I refuse to ever go to Appleby's. Still, there is great food in this town though a bit pricier than other places due to tourism.

Haha, I actually see the chain restaurants as a plus. Not a fan, either, but from the perspective of a retiree you get affordable variety. And for much of the country that doesn't come from one of 10 or 20 big cities, they don't know much better than chains.

Growth has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand-------------Billings Montana is the #1 retirement community. Henderson Nv ranks #4 in this study.

And my point was to question the merits of the study. There are many, many ways to manipulate such studies, and obviously they heavily weighted taxes. And my other point is, let's not confuse the ranking with reality. Billings is not on the radar, and the population and growth stats indicate that. It's a nice plug for Henderson, but any study that ranks Billings as #1 instantly lacks credibility. I think you will be hard pressed, in any such ranking, to find much commonality at all.

And my guess would be, as with many studies of this nature, it has more than a little to do with the work of the local govt in jumping through hoops to be ranked. With all these different studies that pop up, it's perfectly reasonable to assume cities don't expend resources into competing for all of them, and some probably don't try to compete at all.

Okay, we're retirees and we are heading there as soon as our house here sells. Why would we or anyone else come across the country over 3000 miles to live in Henderson or Summerlin? The pros for retirees keep the old con's list tipped heavily:
#1- the already existing retirement communities. That is such a plus
for us to settle in a community surrounded by thousands of other
people our age with planned activities and recreational facilities.
#2-the lower cost of living which has to be a priority when living on a
fixed income. There is no state tax, property taxes are ridiculously
low and so are utilities compared to what we now pay.
#3-the weather is wonderful for seniors with arthritis and cold, snowy
winters that cause slips and falls are non-existent.
#4-being a city approaching 2 million people, we will now have stores,
entertainment and shopping that is uncommon where we currently
live.
And last, I personally do not think chain restaurants tend to be senior magnets. I will not go into one and want something more than a high school student standing on the fry line who knows the burger must be placed at the 9:00 position and the oil for the deep fryer should last until customers begin complaining the fries taste like onion rings. One of our favorite restaurants there is Mimi's. I have friends with unlimited budgets who claim "food is food" so why not Applebee's or Denny's and then there are others like me who if they can't get quality, will go without eatting. Las Vegas does have some wonderful two for one and lost leader buffets though that for sure stretches the dining dollar. Every month coupons are printed in the association newspaper that go out in SC Summerlin and SC Anthem offering discounts to either Southpointe, GVR or two nice casino's in Summerlin.
And I too, find Billings, Montana with it's extreme winter weather very debatable on the short list for seniors.
