Kids and even teachers here have been talking about it and laughing but saying how bull this is. You guys got a mere 3 inches of snow and you act like it's the end of the world... No school, no flights, roads closed, yadda yadda. I MEAN COME ON. We're lucky if school's closed when we get over a foot with roads covered, ice all over, and cars stuck in driveways. And none of that "we're unprepared" stuff. 3 inches is NOTHING on the road. We've had multiple feet on the roads and people go to work, people go to the store, people go for a jog, people go icefishing, people even have barbecues in the snow. The Buffalo, NY area is supposed to get over a foot of snow tomorrow... Check www.wgrz.com tomorrow and see if they close a lot of schools... I guarantee you that only a few if any will be closed... White out conditions, ice, and everything. Schools out there will more than likely be open.

Snow day for 3 inches give me a break what is the world coming to?

We need snow like this to even have a prayer for a snow day...

You need to understand something first and foremost.. NYC Metro area (and Westchester, where you are) is used to any sort of snow. Usually anything 3 to 6 inches will result in at most a delayed opening for schools and businesses around here.

A city like Las Vegas has no snow preparation at all. Let me repeat, none. at. all. No plows, no sanders, nothing. So in effect, when a place like that gets 3-5 inches (and actually Henderson got closer to 8 inches), it cripples roads. Take a look on some of the local news sites out there and see the video of how the roads were during rush hour yesterday. When a city is not prepared they take the necessary precautions. Just cause it isn't what you might be used to, doesn't mean it isn't effective. Or necessary. People in Vegas just are not used to driving in conditions such as that.

McCarren Airport was closed because they have no snow removal eqiupment. Such equipement costs millions. Obviously not an essential cost for a city that gets snow like this once every 30 years.

For what it's worth, most cities down south (Baltimore, DC, Raleigh, etc.) pretty much close down completely in less than 3 inches of snow.

And really now? A taxi can that's been plowed in is not a good indication of a NYC blizzard.. really.

Yeah, having lived much of my life in conditions like yours, I do think it's overkill. But keep in mind that you have snow removal equipment. We don't. Not even at the airport. And the airport doesn't have de-icing equipment, so flying out of here was too dangerous in the storm. Most of our major airplane crashes were in conditions like we had yesterday. Hundreds of lives were lost.

People here don't know how to drive in snow, or rain for that matter. We only see snow like that once about every five years, and rain is pretty rare also, with only 4 inches per year.

Per the RJ: "...the county's snow-clearing equipment, which consists of two snowplows, two snowblowers and two graders,"
This is for a county of 8,000 square miles...the size of Vermont...and 2 million people.

Having moved here from an area notorious for severe ice storms, I had to chuckle at the school closures. A good part of the snow - and all of it on the roads - was gone by the time I left for work at 6 AM.

Come on y'all. People like to make things seem more exciting than they really are, and since nothing exciting ever happens in Las Vegas let us have our cheap thrill for just one day at least.

Like I said, don't preach about being unprepared. 3 inches is NOTHING on the roads. I've driven on roads with over 2 feet of snow covering them. Snow equipment or not... 3 inches is NOTHING even when it's on the roads.

I can understand if they had 9 or more inches of snow with no equipment, but there's no excuse to get out of school, cancel flights, and close everything for 3 inches on the road. That wouldn't even cover my shoe and I've walked to the bus with snow deeper than my knees.

Three inches of snow on a runway is dangerous. No de-icing fluid is also dangerous. I'd rather they close the airport than leave it open so we can all feel like tough guys.

Schools in Savannah Georgia used to close down if snow was in the air.
