Hi, I was hired as a Steady Extra at a Casino on the Strip.
The hire date was December 2007.
Ever since I started working there, I've always worked 40+hours EVERY single weeks until July.(pretty much I work like a full-time employee)
In the month of August, Sept, and Nov, my work decided to reduce my work hours from 0 to 24 hours a week. And in this month, I havent work at all...

I was told by a co-worker that even if I was hired as a steady extra, and I've worked for 40hours for 16 weeks, I should be locked in with my hours, meaning that the work has to give me 40 hours every week. Is that info true?

Also, I have no idea that when will i work again, I asked the boss and she said it's pretty dead. Am i allow to file unemployment benefits because of this?

Thanks for the help!

I don't know what you mean by a "steady extra", perhaps you can explain a little more in detail. However, Nevada is a "at-will" state meaning that they can terminate employment whenever and however as they choose and there is no "lock rule", they can cut your hours as business dictates.

You can file unemployment, my advice is to do this as soon as possible and tell them when you were let go from the job so they can retroact the unemployment. Just make sure you are making some effort to find employment or check with the JobConnect office and you'll start receiving payments on a debit card issued by the state. You can then use the card for food, gas, or other necessities.

'steady extra' means when a full time employee is gone on vacation or when the business is in need of extra help, the work will call "steady extra" in a week advance to fill in the spot.

Which hotel are you with? Not all of them are union. My sister worked at the Luxor in room reservations, and they were Teamsters. When they were bought out by MGM-Mirage, they became non-union. They work from a central office, and she now books rooms for the Luxor and the Mirage.

I don't know how your union handles steady extras that work 40 hour weeks, but you should be talking to them, not your girlfriends.

My God, you haven't filed for unemployment yet? You need to do it before the end of this week or you will cheat yourself out of a lot of your benefits. Go to this website and you can either do it online, or scroll to the bottom of that page and find the telephone claims number. If I remember correctly the quarter ends on Saturday. I'm retired from ESD and don't have the Standard Claims Calendar anymore so I can't swear it isn't next Saturday. But regardless, you should have called the first week you didn't work full time. When working as a steady extra or on call, you are considered laid off every night when you go home, then re-employed the next time you are called in. Not to confuse you, but if they tell you before your shift ends to come back the next day then you aren't technically laid off that THAT NIGHT. But anytime you earn in a week less than unemployment would have paid you, you should be entitled to a partial unemployment payment. The heck of it is, that every time you earn any money at all you have to call and reopen your claim. But most of your thousands of fellow steady extras or on call workers have been doing that for years.

Go here and file right now. If you can't do it online, call before 5:00pm. It will take a while on the phone though and it may be too late today. I don't know if they are going to be taking claims on Friday or not. It might be a paid holiday for ESD. So you'd better do it on line.

You should talk to someone at the local office. If my memory serves me, the office is on Shadow Ln.

There haven't been any unemployment claims offices for ten years. You file on line or by phone now. The JobConnects are there to help you get a job. They do have dedicated phones and computers that you can use to file, but you can do that at home. There is no more standing in line for hours and filing out reams of paper forms. We went to telephone claims in 1998, and on line computer claims sometime after that. I would imagine that in this economy you will be on hold for quite a while if you file by phone, so it's best to file from your computer unless you have complicated issues. Then you'll need to talk to a claims examiner, but you'll have no direct contact with them. We weren't even allowed to reveal where they were located.
