Hi everyone! I am moving to henderson pretty soon and have a question about the roads. Hope this thread doesn't sound silly buy I have a hard time driving at night if there aren't many street lights. Do they streetlights on most of the roads there?? Also I'm coming from NJ the infamous jug handle land. Are there many jug handles there?

No jug handles out here. In terms of visibility, my biggest gripe is that they dont paint lane markers on the roads here. They put little raised buttons into the pavement to mark the lanes and they are hard to see at night. You can feel them when you start to leave your lane though.

Better road marking would require more money for special paint, labor, etc. Remember, no income taxes means less money to do things. Someone else posted it earlier today...you get what you pay for in NV.

I'd figure that placing those stupid little buttons on the road would take more money and man hours that striping the road with some fluorescent paint.

Only one jug handle probably on the whole west coast is getting on and off I-15 at Charleston and Grand Central Parkway. They've promised to get rid of it ever since it opened. Dumbest thing I've seen NDOT come up with so far and they have a lot of dumb ideas.

Most of our streets are generally well lighted and much wider than you are probably used to. You won't be driving on narrow, twisty, two lane roads through dark and dreary woods out here. You'll have nostalgia attacks when you think of narrow twisty roads and you'll wish for one to drive away the boredom of straight, level streets. Most major streets are at least five lanes with the middle being the turn lane. Most intersections have left turn lights. Nothing like I encountered in Pissthecataway, NJ, when I had to drive about ten miles in one direction in order to cross over and go the other way. What's up with that? Haven't they heard of traffic signals? There are quirks that you'll have to get used to though. Like "sawtooth" roads, for instance. They don't usually pave in front of undeveloped land. The future builder will be responsible for it, so you can be driving along enjoying four lanes when all of a sudden the outside lane on one side disappears. Usually it's on your side. If you do find yourself on a dark street at night, take it slow, as that's usually where and when you'll run into the sawtooth lanes. No biggie though. We also have dips that are in the intersections of some streets, mostly now only in older neighborhoods, for runoff, in those few times it actually rains, which is about six times a year. 99% of the time you'll be on roads of five to seven lanes wide, with working, albeit not synchronized, traffic signals, and happy as a clam you aren't driving anywhere on the east coast.

it is very difficult for me to drive at night because of the issues of the lane markings...also, depending on where you live in Henderson, there may not be enough lighting...personally, i think that all of Las Vegas is lacking in streetlights, especially when you pass through rural preservation zones, like Pecos between Sunset and Warm Springs, but that's because they are preservation zones and the residents wanted it like that...many streets only have lights on one side of the street and the other side is left very dark...also, on curvy streets, which we have a lot of, its hard to keep them lit, since they don't put many lights close together on those streets and have them far apart...

The main thing to watch for here, if you're coming from the east coast, is when you're driving along minding your business in the far right lane to avoid the speeders and all of a sudden with no warning the dang lane becomes right turn only and you're already too close to the intersection to move over to the left.

And yes, I know all of the reasons for those lane separation bumps, but gosh I hate em.

You will likely have some concern over the lighting in some areas and not in others just like in NJ. Keep in mind, they drive fast here and they don't slow down for yellow lights. However, due to the tinting of glass on almost every vehicle, I haven't seen any road rage yet. I guess ya can't see the single digit salute or screeming face through both sets of tinted windows, lol.
