Hey all,

I'm 25 with no degree and a few years work experience as a busboy/server at a fairly cheap Italian restaurant. I'm thinking about moving to Vegas w/ friends but am concerned about finding work.

Do you think I'd be able to find something in the first 6 or so months?

I should probably add that I got a DUI last year (not sure if employers do background checks).

Thanks for the help.

Stay home. Vegas is full of people like you. You are not employable.

Try interning and working for free for a few months with someone in a professional field that you have a genuine interest in... something that can become a career that you feel passionate about so that you'll stick to it and develop a long history. Consider going to school as well. Develop MARKETABLE skills. Busboys with DUIs ain't gonna cut it in life.

You sound like a real go-getter. I'd say move to Vegas as quick as possible. And be sure you call it Vegas too, the natives love that.

Thanks Pops, I'm pretty psyched about it. I have a buddy out there who laughed at me for calling it Las Vegas. He told me, "Everyone here calls it either Vegas or "The" Vegas, bro." lol, I can't wait to get down there and meet some people already!

most of the employers do background checks.. with a dui, finding a job in a bar is going to be difficult if not impossible.... you can get a job here if minimum wage works for you..also a year worth of savings is what you will need to get a job.. and if you get the gambling bug, you'll be broke in a month

It's much easier to get skills and education in a town where you have lived for a long time, even if you don't like it. Don't move somewhere you have no business contacts and no access to educational assistance. I have lived all over the country and can tell you it's hard enough being a stranger in a strange land even when you have a college degree and work experience.

Logline had good advice for you: develop marketable skills before you set out to establish a new home. Otherwise, you will be a paycheck-to-paycheck drone the rest of your life. Las Vegas is not paradise unless you are already in the money. Desire and hustle used to be worth a great deal, but not in legitimate businesses in today's economy. Sorry to give you bad news, but better you should learn this now than when you are really in a hole.

Also, you should seek legal advice on what you can do about that DUI on your record. A minimum wage job, even if you have roommates, will hardly provide you enough money to live on. How would you be able to afford car insurance? Even without a DUI, Las Vegas has among the most expensive insurance rates in the country.

Please make a sensible decision. I know it sounds trite, but today IS the first day of the rest of your life. Get some credentials and do some serious preparation before starting out on a big adventure.
