I have been a part timer since the 80's. I'm looking forward to being a full timer as soon as I can sell my darn house and move!

People in Vegas do the same things as people in Chicago. They work, go to school, church, the library, and the grocery store. People who live in Vegas very seldom go to the strip unless they work there. Once you get away from the tourist areas it's not that different from anywhere else with palm trees!

There are lots of families with kids and there are sports teams and pretty much all the activities you are used to. I don't have kids so I never looked at places to live with that in mind.

If you look back through the Las Vegas posts you will find a lot of conversations on this very thing. It's debatable... you have to ask yourself, do you want to raise your kids in "sin city?" Are you okay that the economics of the city are based on gambling? That there is semi-por nographic images around town? That just about everything you go do to with your kids (even bowling, movies, etc.) are usually located in casinos? Are you okay that the cities new slogan is "what happens here stays here," as if there are no consequences for your actions. Are you okay that they have some of the worst ranked schools in the country? Are you okay that that the school district is a minority majority district?

Those are the questions you have to ask yourself. If you feel okay with all that then by all means pack your bags. I would say head to Green Valley, because it's by far the nicest and most family friendly.

Personally I lived there for almost 10 years, just left a few months ago. I liked it when it was just my husband and I. But once I started having kids I re-evaluated and didn't feel like it was a good place to raise kids. For so many reasons... so we moved away two months after my youngest was born. I don't think it's a good place to raise kids, but that's my opinion. I'm sure others will think it's just fine and dandy.

Redwingfan and I man the two ends of this discussion. It is interesting by the way that we agree more than either of us is comfortable with...

I am old enough that my children are all in their 30s or older...so I don't have to deal with the problem directly. If however my youngest daughter...Approximately Redwingfans age I suspect...decided to leave the suburbs of Portland OR I would tell her to move here in an instant...and that could well occur.

If they came here it would be a bit of a second place finish...they can't afford the 1.5 million to go back to LA where they would really like to be...But I would be very comfortable with my grandkids here...and I would probably fix them up with a place close...but not too close...to mine. This is not going to be hard...they will likely spend more than 3/4 million on their home.

I believe the schools would be as good as the ones they left in the snooty southern suburbs of Portland. I do not believe they would be in anyway contaminated by the culture. In fact as they get to be older teens it may well give them exposure to things that may help them over the years. It is a great town to learn how to deal with people...particularly hordes of people...and that is a marketable skill.

I would inform them of the possibilities of Boulder City...Maybury RFD...and they just might go for it. While reasonably mature they do fall into the "would it not be wonderful if" school that afflicts many of that generation.. But hopefully I could convince them to try the naked Vegas and get an acre over in the NW.

But with either outcome I would be happy that their children were well provided for and would grow to adults in the pattern of their parents.

So while Redwingfan chooses to go elsewhere I suggest to my children that they come here. The reader is left to decide whether I am a selfish old man or Redwingfan a hysterical puritan. The truth likely lies in between .

I live across the beltway from a park, and I can always hear them playing soccer over there. Just about every night the parks here are full of kids playing sports or just playing. Riding their bikes through the neighborhoods. Hanging out at the library doing their homework.
Like Yellowsnow said, we do everything here just like any other city. The gambling part we hardly do, it's just there, and daily life here, i never give it a thought.

I stopped and thought about what the other gentleman said and at least the slot machines are all over. But honestly, I don't even SEE them. They don't even register. There aren't hookers everywhere unless they are masquerading as soccer moms.

Maybe the wonder of Las Vegas is that your life can be as 'out there' as you want or as 'normal' as you want!
