I love to strike up conversations with people all the time. I've found that a lot of people are more friendly than you'd be led to believe

I also agree that the neighborhoods with the most community are usually further off the strip. Summerlin, CH, Aliante, most of the far west, NW, and far northern neighborhoods have more sense of community than say....oh IDK the Twain/Swenson area or Nellis/Charleston

The closer you live to 215, the better off you'll be if you're looking for a sense of community

Than again not all older developments are ghetto. Im sure there are a lot of older communities around West Central LV (dyni, opinion needed here) that have longtime neighbors who know each other and look out for one another
Vegas definitely has more of a free for all feel to it to me. That's not to say there isn't any sense of community. As Pink pointed out, one can easily feel very welcome if they set out to create connections. What you point out here is actually what I believe to be the problem. There are a number of smaller communities (usually wealthier) within the larger area known as Las Vegas that have stronger community ties. Largely due to the fact that people made large investments and your neighbors aren't changing every other month. What you end up with though is islands of community within a larger city that tends to not feel all that cohesive at times. This is made worse by people feeling they need to live in gated armed guarded communities.

Crime also gets disproportionately reported on the news which I'm no stranger to coming from the Boston area. Boston was ranked the most depressing news in the whole country in either '09 or 2010. A good majority of the threads here even reflect people's fears of being targeted by crime in hopes of moving to the 'utopia area of Las Vegas'.

Additionally, a solid proportion of minorities seem to be concentrated in certain areas of the city and people (mostly white) don't want anything to do with those areas. Again though, there's a whole bunch of cities like this.

All in all, as usual it is people's irrational fears and beliefs such as that hardly anyone stays here or that it's a ghost town which create or take away from a solid sense of community for the city as a whole.

Has anyone been to the Margaritaville casino yet? Looks pretty cool. I am definitely going there in about a week and a half! I hope it does well. I know it is very small, but I love that it is a theme thing and I love tropical themes! (and Margaritas!)

You can only raise traffic fines (a form of tax collection) so much and push the building inspectors (tax collectors at their worst) to find the tiniest infraction in a business and sock em' with fines!

The weather is amazing right now, the cool moist air is refreshing. I'm parked along Hualapai somewhere between 215 & farm just enjoying the cool air and amazing view. This past summer was amazing and probably some of the most fun of my life so far.

true I maybe losing my job in less than a month, but somehow I have a feeling that everything is going to be just fine. I have the most amazing new girl by my side and I'm actually looking forward to winter time here in las vegas, last winter was truly beautiful and I'm ready for winter again

It's nice to finally have the air conditioner off. Windows open and fans in use. I am almost cold sitting here with the window open, with shorts, a top and no shoes.

As for North Las Vegas going broke, I don't see why they don't just merge the entire valley into one mega city, or at least just merge NLV with LV.

Thats the same thing I was thinking. I was also wondering about Nellis AFB not being part of N. Las Vegas or Las Vegas. What is the logic or benefits in that?

MOST AFB's are not a part of the city that surrounds them.....they are Federal land and exempt from all city, county and state regulation....i.e. a police, TECHNICALLY ends at the front gate....
YEARS ago, when the very FIRST operation Redflag was held here....1962 or 63 a group of the Army's finest were Bivouac'd across the hwy from the Nellis front gate.[82nd Airborne]

They went down to Fremont Street one night on a pass....they got drunk [duh]

A local cop chastised them about their rowdy ways.

The turned his police care upside down at the intersection of First and Fremont. [this broke his lights at the very least.]

The cops said to the 82'nd boys....You're unner arrest.....[this did NOT set well with the guys from the 82nd]

A chase ensued.....screeching down Las Vegas Blvd North....thru NLV [there exists a "Hot Pursuit Agreement"

Out of NLV and down the hill crossing Nellis Blvd and the olde Cheyenne/LVBN intersection.

Turned left and out into the desert by the Club 25.

There it ended.

An MP at the gate jacked a shell into the chamber and leveled his M1 at the LVPD, smile and said Halt.

And they halted.

The company Commander was called.

He came to the compound gate.

LVP said we're coming in to take your guys.

Company Commander said "No"

Then turned to his Gate MP's and said "Shoot any person that attempts to pass thru this gate."

NOW.....in fairness to the Company Commander....the errant misfits from the 82nd pulled enough KP and yardbird detail to ensure that they knew they were wrong.

EVEN hot pursuit can not get you past the gate.

NOW I do believe that a "Hot Pursuit" sgteement was reached after that with Nellism NLV, LV and CC,,,,this did NOT extend, however, to Lake Mead Base [or Nellis Area 2 as it was called] Breaching the gate THERE would get you KILLED....period....

Than that may where the problem lies. Property taxes may be too low

TIJ has a really good point about NLV being on a supersonic jet

I cannot believe the police officers get paid $92k a year PLUS benefits, tahn again, due to certain areas of NLV that $92k may be justified depending on where you patrol (An NLV officer who patrols Aliante will probably see a lot less action than say LV Blvd N and Pecos area)

But even so, that is a ridiculous salary for a police officer. Supposedly, they make $15k a year more than metro (so Im told) which if thats true, a Metro officer is receiving around $77k a year

Back to my point about property taxes. It seems like North Las Vegas needs to raise property taxes in order to avoid their financial fiasco from getting worse, and I think the NLV police dept should take a pay cut though Im sure that wont sit well with the officers or their union

It seems like a state takeover of North Las Vegas is inevitable. Even though raising property taxes may be the solution, it would probably cause a LOT of residents to leave and move to LV, Henderson, or somewhere in Unincorporated Clark County, and if the city told the police officers to just deal with a pay cut, watch the already through the roof crime rate in NLV go even higher than it is now
