Ugh.. 2nd friend in 2 days had their house broken into. Both in Spring Valley. Both had a large rock thrown through their back slider. One had an alarm that went off, and the thieves only got a couple things in the kitchen (an iPhone, and an iPad). The 2nd friend didn't have an alarm, and were out to dinner with my wife and I last night. They left their house to run errands around 4:00p, and didn't leave any lights on, which they normally do. The house was completely ransacked, with many items taken (laptops, jewelry, etc).

They got home from dinner to find it burglarized around 10:30p. We drove to their house to be with them, help clean up, etc, while waiting for the police. We left at 3:00a. The police still hadn't shown up to take a report.. I found that odd.

We're renters, so aren't going to install a security system in someone's house, but thinking fake ADT stickers may be called for.

You could get a wireless system that wouldn't be permanently installed, that you could take with you when you leave. Look at something like Simplysafe (note, I've never used them, but it seems appropriate for your situation.)
