Merry Christmas to you and your wife and family. It was nice meeting you both for that first and last annual City Data meet at the park so long ago. I find it hilarious sometimes thinking about it being the first and last. But it was a good time and got to meet a lot of other regulars at the time.

I am hanging out at home today, will figure out something for the Christmas dinner that won't take too long to cook. It will be cold and windy here, so best to stay inside. But first, I have to go to sleep first, so off I go.

Anyone catch that story in the paper? NLV off duty police officer, and husband, both shoot at their guest, returning to their home unexpectedly.

Hosts go to bed, guest says she wants to go out to?, perhaps down to the Strip or local casino, tells hosts she'll be back later. She returns early, unexpectedly, hosts mistake her for a burglar, and both shoot at her, but they didn't kill her.

I could see how that could happen. The guest who returned probably didn't want to awake her hosts, so she quietly entered the house, tiptoed around, not to make noise, and she stumbled on something, awoke her hosts, and bang, bang, bang!

And in another story, at Canyon Gate Apartments, someone visiting a friend, left to go some place, and returned, pounding on a neighbor's door, instead, and got shot!

Small wonder burglaries are on the rise, as more Americans arm themselves, as more burglars are looking for guns, something more valuable than jewelry!

What has always puzzled me Tij, as an outsider looking in, is why Americans have any burglaries at all!! I mean, if you do, you may get shot!!

We don't have guns here of course. I keep a very stiff cardboard tube by my bedside....... don't laugh, my wife hit me with it to test it out...... it hurts........

A ball bat would be better than cardboard.

You may be able to get a shotgun where you are.

I could apply for a shotgun licence. I would need two people of good character to recommend me. Then a policeman would come to my home to interview me, and check out where the gun would be safely secured.

Plus, if I was to shoot a burglar with it, I would better have a very good reason for doing so. I would have to literally have been in fear for my life, and just saying so, isn't enough.

A farmer in England years ago, who lived in an isolated farmhouse, was burgled a number of times. The last time, he shot dead one of the intruders. He did this in total darkness in his home, shooting from the stairs. The court decided he wasn't in fear for his life, and jailed him.

I firmly believe that you should have the right to shoot anyone who breaks into your house.

I don't have a gun or anything valuable, but I will snark them to death.

Happy New Year, Las Vegans! I lived in Las Vegas for 35 years, and retired to the Idaho panhandle 12 years ago.

Happiness and good health to all in 2016!

I simply can't imagine it, being in an apartment building that catches on fire, and you have to evacuate the building in the middle of the night, particularly during this cold weather!

That happened yesterday, at 1409 Vegas Valley Drive/Maryland, around 2am. The American Red Cross is helping the 17 children, 2 disabled people and 19 adults who were displaced.

And what happens to your valuable belongings, some items that can't be replaced?

Part of the problem is the way we build these fire-trap buildings. All wood! In Mexico, you can't even get insurance on a house, apartment building built out of wood, it's concrete all the way, even the roof! That would certainly help minimize the damage/displacements.

I have a townhouse with concrete walls between the units, so I don't really worry about it that much, unless the fire is my fault!

A unit burnt out here, about 5 years ago, and it didn't disrupt anyone! Just the unit burnt, it didn't effect the units next to it!

In Tucson I'm going one step further, with one of those old slump brick 60's/70's townhouses, with interior slump brick walls as well. It'll be colder in winter, hotter in summer, but at least I'll feel a bit safer from the possibility of a fire.
