Sure, One can just turn off the AC and just endure it while others will live off rice and water just to keep there home cool.

That is not what I referring to. I meant maybe taking the bus or driving an olde (paid off) car. Turning off cable, cell phone, etc also helps. Personally, I drive an old car I paid $500 for and have only $38 a month for insurance. I have no cell phone. To me, I want to be comfortable at home since that is where I spend the majority of my time at. To each his/her own....
