I was bicycling in my neighborhood the other night and there's three commercial strips nearby on Desert Inn/Sandhill. In one strip, three storefront evangelical churches,
on the corner they converted a two-story BankofAmerica building into a church, and now Horizons opened one in another commercial strip, that makes 5 in that one area.

And heading west on DI, two more before you reach Pecos-Mcleod, most of these churches geared to a spanish-speaking congregation.

And how's your neighborhood commercial strips, all that empty space going to storefront churches as well?

I guess i'd rather see churches in empty strip malls rather than more pay day loan places.

Another great thing happening at Spring Valley, the grounbreaking of the 36 acre Charlie Frias Park, the land has been vacant for many years and now finally it will be turned into a park that will benefit the community.

What I've noticed up here in central ny, is people seem to be leaving the conventional churches and joining these huge/mega churches. I think they would be considered evangelical but not sure...they have strange names like "The church of nations" dont see any conventional protestant or catholic affiliations on them. They just built one on the way to work that could hold 2-3 football fields in it. The huge old Catholic churches are shutting down/consolidating all over the area. Not trying to comment on peoples beliefs or how they worship, just commenting on what appears to be a shift from past generations.

I think there may well be more payday loan places and dollar loan centers in las vegas than there are grocery stores, its quite sad

Orlando had a lot of them as well, but nowhere near as many as I see here. Do THAT many people in this town have a gambling problem?

That also explains why there are so many pawn shops (even on the good sides of town as well) and often the pawn shops will have a payday loan center inside of them

I don't think that the growth of the payday loan and pawn companies is tied so much to serve the needs gambling population, but moreso the chronically poor that can't do business with a real bank. You used to find them primarily in areas with higher populations of minorities and illegal immigrants, but that seems to have changed.

I just read a pretty good blog on the subject this morning.

I was mistaken all along, since I've never used them, that payday loan places were patronized mostly by the poor.

A year ago, I was awakened at work, when two nurses (one LPN, one RN)were making comparisons between these payday loan places. The RN makes $29 an hour, the LPN makes $20 an hour, and both of them are frequent users of these places. The RN is a nonstop shopaholic, and neither one of them ever mentions gambling.

Makes you wonder....................

A really good preacher, with a talent for acting skills, who can bring the audience to tears, can empty any number of a congregant's pockets as well, and then?
Run next door to a payday loan store!
