People get murdered in "safe" neighborhoods too.

I'm not going to shoot someone in the back if they are running off with my TV, the police can chase them and I have insurance. However, if someone violently breaks into my home during the day and I'm in fear of my life or my family's I will certainly respond with appropriate force.
I agree, once someone has entered your house, you have the right to defend your family.

Now I feel as if they CAN happen, and DO happen, but generally in cases where perps seek out (and find) easy prey. Alarms, alertness and knowing the neighbors/neighborhood seems like the plan I will be following. No Beretta for me, but I would guess that many folks intent on cleaning out other people's homes aren't armed. (More assaults on record, if so). Hopefully it really is a matter of keeping an eye on who is in and out of the neighborhood, "working" in the community, and trying to access one's home.
My car was broken into a few years ago and someone tried to break into my house right after I moved in. I live in Silverado Ranch which is not generally thought of as a bad part of town.

Two of my close friends have had their cars stolen and another had his house robbed. In each case, it turned out we were hit because we were easy prey. Someone likely noticed my place seeing all of the moving boxes and figured it would be an easy score to just grab boxes. My car was broken into when it was left sitting overnight in an empty lot downtown. Stupid move on my part.... Goes on and on.

Be aware and always figure that someone is out there to take advantage of you and you should be fine. I've been victimized a few times here and there in Las Vegas over the last few years, but those experiences do not make me feel unsafe or uncomfortable about living here.
