We are looking into staying a Southgate Condos on Gary. Please let us know if it is good or bad and if it is safe.

Thanks.

Paul

Staying? These are condos, not a hotel. Used to be apartments, converted to condos, decimated by the economy since just about everyone in there was an investor and rented them out.

That being said, small complex right by South Point on LVB. Not really close to the strip, not really far. Must have a car or plan on cab rides or buses.

Thanks for the quick reply flyingtigers.

Yes, we are looking at staying there for ~2 mos in a vrbo type situation.

This is the only review I could find on the net but I'm not sure about its veracity.

"Gate is always broke. Cops in n out of here all the time. Young punks smoking dope at night. Gang graffiti on the walls just outside the complex. Noise. Overpriced. Staff is ignorant. SWAT team came by a few weeks ago to storm an apt down the way. Who needs that?"

We already elected to go to Vegas instead of Afganistan haha.

Any thoughts?

I looked at them when I was looking to buy. Gate was always open, but that review is exaggerating a bit I would think. Small pool and clubhouse, some units were redone when changed over. How close to the action do you want to be? You can easily walk to South Point. When they were apartments they were called St. James Place. And WOW have prices crashed there. Going for under 50K now and 38 available. Like I said, all investors.

Was that a review when it was apartments?

The reason the gate is always broken, most likely in the hot months..kids wanting to use the pool. I live in a gated townhome community, and everytime the pool reopens, we have nothing but broken gates on each end of the neighborhood.
Cops in and out a lot? Could also be security, keeping the place safe. The rest of that review just sounds like another disgruntled ex renter that feels they have to trash the place they lived. I guess they get some kind of revenge that way, leaving negative reviews.

Best bet: Go and talk to people that live there and get their views on life over there. Overall, it's a good area. And you have South Point casino, plus M casino farther down. And Silverton close by. Check out that giant Aquarium in there. Excellent.

Thanks for the responses - they make sense.

The review I think is of Southgate and not it's former iteration - sounds like South Central LA - Compton or something huh?.

ixl, you'll find that most reviews at apartmentratings.com sound like all of Las Vegas is one giant ghetto. It isn't. Many people like to exaggerate.
There are some small ghetto area's, most notably the area around MLK and east over to I-15. But that is one tiny area compared to the whole valley that encompasses Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and other area's.

I just put in an offer on a 1 bedroom in Southgate and it was accepted. I live in Massachusetts and plan on luxing out this condo with hardwood, marble, tile, high end appliances and am looking forward totally customizing this condo. I hope other buyers will share my sentiment. I plan on doing my part to make Southgate a wonderful place to live.

I looked at a condo there earlier this year. I would say review is
a gross over exageration. Typical aptartment to condo conversion.
Lots of foreclosures there.
