I've been looking around at apartmentguide.com for rental options, and I have found a lot of places that LOOK good at a good price, but since I don't know the area I'm not sure where I should be focusing. What I want is to be near the strip with a good city view, but I don't know if that's feasible, if I also want to be safe. Does a reasonably priced rental near all the action exist in a safe location or should I just be looking for something else altogether?

The rental apartments that I know of really don't have much of Strip view. You need to go to high-rise rental condos or condos within the Country Club area to find safety - and the prices will be considerably higher. Your chances of finding a nice high-rise view rental relatively cheap are pretty good right now, but "relatively cheap" means $2,000/month, not $800.

Go South of the strip. You will have a valley view, but not necessarily a side view of the strip.

If you go west or east of strip for the side view, you would need to go west for safety.

How much of a view do you want vs distance from what you call the action. Las Vegas is not a huge valley travel wise. You could live a goodly distance west of the strip and still get to the action easily. The reason I mentioned south is that it seems more hip if you are a younger adult. Some may disagree with that assessment.

After you find several apartments, use google maps to help you judge distances and views. Good Luck and Welcome.

I think the Manhattan apartments seem nice. I'd recommend taking a look. They're on the south end of the strip, only a few minutes away from the action (but far enough away that it's not a bad area).
