I'm a midwesterner, master electrician ...whats it look like for starting a company specializing in residential jobs?

Hmm. Do you have loads of money to make the move and support all until new business brings a good cash flow? Then by all means do it.

Right now its pretty much like starting a business anywhere. You take a risk. You market market and market and maybe you survive. There is enough business to go around. You'll just need to beat the bushes like anywhere else until you are established. Good Luck.

Are you talking about residential new construction or service work? New construction is all but dead, so that'd be an unwise move. Service work is always needed, so your chances there would be better. Bear in mind, however, that there are plenty of electricians out there already who had been working in new construction and in commercial, and you'll be competing against them for work.
