BCL092, don't fret other comments listed above. Sure the job market has drastically impacted the economy due to the high unemployment rate, but it all depends on how motivated you are. Although there are many people being laid off and looking for work, the competition is also very low. I hate to say it, but there is a high demand for winners in Vegas. I moved here with no experience other than 4 years as a Jughead with no idea what I was going to do. Now, I did have savings to last me a couple months just in case, but I also had no desire to work a part time job unless I absolutely had to. In the end, my 4 years in the Corp paid off and I found a job making 34K in less than 2 weeks. Good for a 23 yr old with only HS education papers. They hired me thanks to my integrity, positive attitude, and other qualities you can easily adopt if just for a 2 minute interview. Nonetheless, good luck!

I rode a motorcycle with all I owned to AZ with a hundred bucks in my pocket, no job prospects and nowhere to live. I slept on my cycle in the desert (scorpions on the ground). I hustled and worked any job I could. It's been a couple decades ago, and I have no desire to repeat that experience, but you can do anything with the right attitude. I became a certified mechanic and a certified teacher because of interests I found in my travels. Now I'll be moving to Vegas to start a mechanic shop.(Clark County Schools doesn't seem the happiest place to teach, I might try subbing so I can see for myself what's going on.) Good luck! Have fun now before you get old and cautious!

So how do you like being a "loan modification specialist"?

Quick to judge; I guess there really aren't too many jobs in Vegas where a 23 yr old with only a HS education can start making 34K a year. Either your a 16 yr old still living with your parents or a 28 yr old still living with your parents....either way, you really did narrow it down. Great job!

Smile Security in Vegas

There are tons of security positions available in Las Vegas. The economy has not effected this industry to the point of other jobs. You can locate positions from the small private security firms up to the well paid casino officers.
Experience is a plus, however if you have none you can always start out with a small company to get your feet wet and then 6 months later apply with bigger companies. Most large companies only request 6 months to one year experience.
To get into a casino, the secret most times is to know someone who can assist you with getting your foot in the door. [mod] Recommendations are not allowed by posters with less than 10 posts. [/mod]
Good Luck.

Default Security Job for your daughter

I'd appreciate some direct comments in response to Bcl092's question. I have a daughter who just completed 8 years of service in the Coast Guard. She may be interested in Security work here as well. I don't know whether to tell her to stay in New Orleans, or to come here.

Do casinos utilize females in security work? How about Armored Vehicle companies? Is it one of those jobs where they might be looking for females over males? She was in intelligence work, but even the Coast Guard decided to down size. I hate that she got out, but we can't always control our adult kids.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You may want to pass this information on to your daughter. With her military experience she shouldn't have a problem landing one of these slots, and Nellis AFB is hiring for these positions as well. Good Luck.

Get a job in the service industry. When in Rome............. I am currently bartending at a local gaming bar in town and for the last 5 years I have averaged right around $400 a night...and I only have to work 4 days a week. $80K a year to pour Bud Lites....I'll take it.

How is the service industry these days? I know casino's are laying off a lot of employee's, but what about stand alone bars? You mentioned you have been in that business for 5 years, so usually senority is the last cut. Either way, just curious. Also, it may answer other questions in the thread. Thanks.
