There used to be jobs for seniors in LV in the casinos that the locals use. But, since LV is in such dire straits jobwise now, I am assuming that no longer are even the casinos for locals hiring seniors over 65. Right or wrong?
Are there any jobs for seniors over 65 y.o. out there at this time (4/09)? Anything at all where they ask for an older person (office work? cleaning offices? whatever?)?

Wal-Mart employs lots of seniors, tootsie. It's against the law for anyone to discriminate against you because of your age, so honestly, I've never seen a job advertised as "senior wanted" or "senior citizen only," nor have I ever heard of jobs reserved for seniors only.

You just have to jump in there with all the other young people who are applying for jobs. Your age may work against you OR you might be more "desirable" to hire because of your experience and stability.

You just have to submit applications in whatever your field of expertise is.

Go for it and best of luck, you'll find something!

Government jobs. They don't care about age. Seriously. Especially the State.

You mentioned cleaning offices. If you have the stamina at 'over 65' to clean offices, then you could probably be employed next week. Whether cleaning offices or homes, there is work to be had.

Compared to that, hostessing in a restaurant, front desk in an office (answer tel. and making appointments or greeting at Walmart would all be a breeze.

Its really not what you can do, its finding that right person doing the hiring. I had my best luck with real adults in my hiring days for all of the reasons we have all read before.

I know it takes a lot of searching, but the work can be found for those who know how to present themselves well. Good Luck.

What about working at a local senior center or in child care or, if academically qualified, as a tutor for kids needing extra help after school? Maturity and life experience are greatly needed in the lives of a lot of kids, especially those who don't live near grandparents - so if you have the heart for it - you could really make a difference that way.

Can't you substitute teach if you have a degree (not even in teaching)? I think I remember someone on this board telling me that my psych. degree would be okay for substitute teaching.

Yes...but they are hiring at the moment only for the areas where you get hazard pay.

They use regular teachers as subs in the summer. So no summer work.

And it is pretty irregular when you start out. Particularly if you won't work central city and east side.

Good grief..how rough is the area if you get paid hazard pay? Guns and knives flying overhead?
I have no teaching experience, but I do have the 4 year degree.

Nah. Just difficult 8 yos. Try it. Beats a lot of other such occupations.

If you like people and don't mind selling a little get a RE license. You generally starve for a couple of years but if you have someone covering the basics it can work pretty well.

Old f**ts have an advantage selling to old f**ts.

Exactly the same advice I DM'd to her. I even think younger people respect the years of experience. I wonder how many realtors are now active in Las Vegas? It appears the number of sales are running about 3,000 a month. I'm thinking the commission structure must be between 5 - 7% ? I wonder if you have the companies that have the agents pay all their own expenses and then set their own commissions?
