$21K seems about right. Same as a major kitchen remodel, which isn't much harder than digging a big hole.

My ex-brother in law spent 32K on a pool with a hot tub and water fall. A few short palms and desert landscaping were included. Everyone I know who has a pool ******* about maintaining it and the cost of upkeep. Might not be worth the money.

A year or so ago I had quoted adding a built in spa to my existing pool.

It had a couple of complexities not normal but was the classical hole in the ground. Quote was $20,000. Assked a friend who does customs and he thought he could give me a break but still above $18,000.

I did a few spa add-ons to existing pools, and even back in the mid 90's they were $15-20k. Attaching a new structure to the existing, re-piping the system, adding a heater, etc, adds up quickly.

In response to the original question, $21k is probably about right- the base pool price back when I was building them was around $16-17k. Of course, you could save some money and do as you originally suggested- just "dig a hole", and fill it with water......lol.

Just go with a good above ground pool, and take it down for the winter. They work fine as long as you get a good filter and pump with it. I get the Stabilizer levels up to about 70-80ppm and use liquid chlorine to chlorinate it. Should be very inexpensive compared to a permanent pool.

How many gallons was this pool? Algae will form because there is not enough sanitizer in the pool (chlorine). Stabilizer is a chemical that acts like a sunscreen for chlorine so it lasts longer (also called CYA for short). You also need good filtration and circulation in the hottest parts of the day so you will have a safe and crystal clear pool. I do service a few above ground pools, but they are around 5000 gallons and they are usually a little harder to clean because they are elevated. I've seen some nice used ones on Craigslist for under $1000.

Airics...buy the $25 service call from AA702...maybe he will settle for a couple of beers. He can teach you much more than you need to know in a half hour. If you can't afford him dm me but he is much smarter.
