I'm moving to Las Vegas for work, and i'm trying to figure out the best place for me to live. I'm in my 20's, female and looking for a great place thats away from the Strip. I'll be working at Mandalay Bay, so i'll have to drive in everyday. I keep hearing about Summerlin and Henderson. I'm looking for an area that is number one SAFE.... Is it best to rent a house, condo, apartment? Any and ALL advice would help.
THANK SO MUCH

Congratulations and welcome. I'm going to work backwards on your post, I would be cautious on renting a house just because you don't know if the house is in foreclosure proceedings and you may have to move out as soon as you get settled in so not only are you out of a home, you probably are out of pocket with deposits, utilities, etc. I would look at an apartment first.

Our resident RE expert Olecapt will chime in here shortly with recommendations on apartments that are within close driving distance to Mandalay Bay. A lot of us including myself live out in the NW which by the way is a great area and VERY safe; however, you would have a good commute.

Summerlin is a nice area as a master planned community with a ton of amenities. Only negatives will be the commute and a good amount of property crimes happen in Summerlin so again I would check with Olecapt on this one.

Henderson is a good area, the good part is that you would have a very short commute if you can find a place along St. Rose Parkway. I just can't remember any apartment communities (Olecapt can help).

Hope this helps, good luck

why don't you want to live near the Strip?

South Strip is very affordable and a very, very good commute to where you need to be, same with Silverado Ranch or Rancho Las Palmas...

Depending on your budget, I think it may be wise to rent an apt first for 6 mos and get a feel for the areas and the commute.

The complex I stayed at is in Henderson and I really liked it. Seemed well kept, pools were always working, workout room had a good array of machines and such, they also did some nice community things. The apt itself was very nice and roomy. I did like the area too, my husband works on the Strip and he loved the commute. 'Course he was used to a 40 minute commute one way, here in MI.

That said, we are looking at houses in the NW and he is willing to make that commute because we really like the area there and can get a better home for the money. We couldn't touch a home in the area we were renting in. Silverado Ranch is also nice and a good commute.

We live in Silverado Ranch (near the new M casino) and we really like the area. It's also fairly close to the strip, and doesn't take too long to get there, and still a very nice area.
I'd definitely recommend anything off of St Rose/Silverado Ranch.

I would say Summerlin or Mountians Edge. They are close to hiking and Mt. Charleston. Closer to recreation the better for me. We own a business and are able to see there are very affordable homes to rent out here.
Good Luck, it gets HOT out here.

Oh yeah, the west side (Summerlin) stays about 5-10 degrees cooler then the rest of the city.

Henderson and Summerlin are both nice areas and reasonable commutes. Lots of nice apts in Henderson.

Ovation properties are generally very nice, and you can move between properties (you'd have to check, but it gives some options if you don't like the area).

I think this is great advice. You can also feel out what parts of town you like to be in when you're not working. If you like to go out a lot, then maybe downtown or Green Valley would be good. If you like hiking, then Mt's Edge might be your place. Lots of apartment complexes here do short term leases (6 mo or less) for a little extra $.

If you want to rent a house, I think there are places on the web you can check to see the status (to make sure it's not in foreclosure)... not 100% sure on that. Olecapt can probably tell you for sure.

OP I will send you a DM with 8 or 9 condos you might find suitable. These are all south strip or Silverado/Henderson against the hills. There are many more but these are the ones that will take a lease for less than a year.

I would stick with this area if I were you. It is reasonably safe and has a very nice commute. When you know more you can decide if you want to trade off travel time for other features. This area also tends to be rich in young folk...which you may also find an advantage.

If you wish to go the apartment route the Equistrian on Eastern just south of Horizon Ridge works. Kimba I know found the place workable. And the area has all the services right there.
