My girlfriend and I were going to try to make a quick weekend stop in Vegas on our drive from Albuquerque to LA. Some of the threads around here are making me think otherwise, however. Is it even worth visiting anymore? Some people make it sound like a deserted hellhole, basking in a shadow of what it once was. For someone who's never been and isn't expecting anything mindblowing, could it still be a fun weekend?

Also, what is there to do other than gambling? I'll probably play a few slot machines or something, but I'm not huge into gambling. I like the 24 hour alcohol laws though; staying out until 6 AM sipping drinks sounds great.

It is anything but a "deserted hellhole." It's still crowded, especially on weekends, though not to the levels it once was. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing, unless you're responsible for a casino's bottom line.

There are plenty of non-gambling activities, too. If you're into hiking, check out this useful link: Hiking Around Las Vegas

Of course it's 'worth' it! Especially if you've never seen it. Let's see, non-gambling activities; There's the Fremont Street Experience downtown - all outdoors after the sun goes down. There's the New York New York roller coaster, if you like that kind of thing. (I don't) There's rides and a restaurant at the top of the Stratosphere. (never been, myself, but those I know who have say it's great - you can see the entire valley from there) There's also a restaurant near or at the top of the Rio from which you can see most of the Strip. Before I moved here after my husband died, he and I used to come once a year and do no more than walk the Strip, from Downtown to the Luxor. (which at the time was the southern most end of the Strip) There's so much to see that even if you don't gamble at all, you'll never be bored! I don't go down to the Strip at all any more, unless I have out of town guests, but that's more because I spend the majority of my time right here at my computer!

Stay in Vegas. Forget LA, that's the real Stygian pit.

Even with your obvious hidden hostility for something of which you know absolutely nothing, I suppose you can be forgiven for making such naive, albeit mean spirited comments since you've never been here, and being a negative person already, you've probably bought into a lot of the stupid negative remarks from people who don't even live here, especially since the economic disaster that is hurting the whole planet. But the fact is, Las Vegas is now, and has been, for at least 50 years or so, the most exciting city in the U.S. It isn't new to us that people "out there" in the boring hinterlands think all we have here is gambling, but it is surprising when we still hear it, that anyone is still so naive when Las Vegas probably gets more press than any other city in the country. Of course the press is usually negative too. But be advised that the actual reason we locals are here is not usually because we can gamble anytime we get the urge, or do just about anything at all 24/7, it's usually because there is so much else to do here in both town and within short to medium drives besides gambling. You can experience ten times more here in a weekend than you will in a year in Memphis, but you'd have to live here a lifetime to experience it all. It isn't called the entertainment capital of the world for nothing. It's also the center of all that is good in the west which is the best there is in the country.
