Disagreeing is healthy that's what gives different perpectives to these topics. I still stand my ground and would shout it from the highest mountain. The heart beat to this town is the strip soooooooooooooooo unless you gamble, drink, smoke, oh yeah play golf and have lots of money to shop there is nothing that this town offers!!!! I traveled 22,000 miles on a road trip...visited many places and this is the bottom of that list. I only ended up here because of my other half's business but he who lived here for 14 years before can't wait to get out again AND we have only been here since October!!!! Dirty town, hard people, forget class and friendliness and raise a family here...no way!!!!!!!!!

46 years here and find the total opposite.....YES there are papers strewn around periodically because of the wind in the desert. The people here are some of the friendliest, hardest working people I have ever met [lived in colorado, New Jersey and France and have visited cities all over the world]
Am currently raising two of my wifes grandkids both A/B students BOTH with aspirations for higher education, BOTH are drug free. I submit that it might be you who is not a good fit for the town.

Yup been here 13 year now. Rarely gamble, have a cocktail at home some days, don't smoke though I still like the smell of it and I intend to take up golf when I get old. So I don't fit your profile very well but I am quite happy here. I find the people warm and friendly...just like in CA and upstate NY and Kentucky. Warmer than the people in NYC.

Town is reasonably clean...better than most certainly in the rust belt. Better than FL anytime.

I have about 5 million miles traveling on business and am reasonably familiar with virtually all the large cities on the continent. I like some including your namesake Austin and Las Vegas. If there is anyplace else I would prefer to Las Vegas it would be on the coast of southern California.

So if you have problems here my belief is that they are mostly yours. And I suspect they will follow you wherever you go.

You need to get introspective and determine what your problem is...

Well at least the civilized veneer proved very thin...

I like the tunnel vision thing. My primary Physician is a real granola type babe so she may go for it. Clasiscal LV type. She and the hubby and the two kids spend their vacation subsistence camping on an island in Nova Scotia.

And there is my good friend the old retiree down the block. They have a cabin on the Idaho border at 11000 feet that they use year round. We have to drag them out of the bars to get them on the snowmobiles so the can open the cabin in January.

Then the poor retiree couple next door. He can't go to the bars because he has to watch his grass at least 8 hours per day to make sure it is growing properly.

And the really weird guy across the street. Postman about to retire who works until all hours of the night building his hotrod. He already has two but insists that he needs another. Really hard to convince him to go gambling.

And I sit here hour after hour on the computer watching the hummers feed or watching my cat watch the hummers feed. And across the lawn is another cat skulking through the bushes looking for a morning dove who has grown careless. Then I have to drag myself away to go sniff cigarette smoke.

By the way as an ex-smoker I still love the smell. Convinces me that my addiction remains even after 30 years.

Again it would appear to be your problem. You might think about it a little more seriously. Throwing barbs at Dyn and me is a waste. We have both been skewered by professionals.

First you say disagreeing is healthy and then you can't handle the explanations of their disagreement.

If you read the OP, they already read all the negative and were searching for people with positive things to say. There are negative posts here and you could have just added your opinions to those.

My POSITIVE opinion is coming from Michigan, where the grass is green unless it is white, there are plenty of lakes, neighbors are further apart, yards are generally bigger-moved to Vegas for 5 mos for husband's employment, had to come back to MI for personal reasons, can't wait to get back-we bought a home there-first thing I notice is that the roads are cleaner, the parking lots are cleaner for the most part (there is always your places that are not taken care of as well), the people are 100% nicer, friendlier and helpful. The weather is awesome, I love when it does rain you really appreciate it because it doesn't happen that often as opposed to MI where you appreciate sunny days for the same reason.

IMO, the tunnel vision lies within you that you could not see beyond the Strip and discover other forms of entertainment-trust me it is there. I do so love to hear these negative comments because they are usually followed by the poster screaming to move and that is good-we need to keep all the happy people there, good riddance to the rest. They will find good company in the Midwest with all the grumpy, dismal, gray cloudy people and days.

Default Las Vegas

I wonder what would bring out such a vitrolic tirade....ignorance perhaps? Having just come back from Texas a few months ago, I can say that one thing I did miss on the road was the level of service you get anywhere you go. Whether its the grocery store or a restaurant in Henderson, you get great friendly service all the time. And if small town living is your thing, then Boulder City is just over the hill.

Back to the question at hand. Summerlin is very nice, but a tad expensive (not as much as it was though!). Green Valley is comperable and a little cheaper. Out of the two, I perfer GV over Summerlin. Both offer nice neighborhoods, good schools, golf, parks and plenty of other recreational opportunities.

I am also researching relocating to LV from the Pacific Northwest as a retiree. I don't mind the heat as I am a native Californian, but I do like the fact that there is a lot of reasonably priced entertainment available. That being said, you are young and may be planning on having a family.
I think it wouldn't hurt to also research the Phoenix area. They are also having a housing crisis and the housing deals are probably a little better because most of the houses are less than 5 years old and on larger lots. The weather in Phoenix is not quite as hot as it is in LV. Although Phoenix is a major city, it cannot compare to LV for entertainment. It is only about a 5 hour drive from LV to Phoenix so when you make your trip it might be worth it to look at both spots.

Why call people ignorant for loving their city? Seems to me you are just not a happy person, you really just need to move on literally.

Vegas is so much more then the strip, and most of us do not go into casinos that often. The only time I am on the strip is to go to my favorite Thai restaurant. Dirty, humm, there are much worse places then Vegas. Hard people, I encounter so many nice people throughout my day, from the bank to the stores to my neighbors.

I am raising my family here, I have a 4 year old, and about to take custody of my 15 year old brother. He is actually coming from a bad area in Ohio, so this will be like a vacation for him. So it can be done, but you have to actually do your job and be a parent.

Life for the most part is what you make of it, with its bad points and its good points.
