For most retirees cheap counts. They're lucky to have the money to retire at all. So anything that keeps their expenses down helps.

It's not "at least Las Vegas is cheap." At most, Las Vegas is cheap.

!00% agree. I consider it a blessing to be retired and not stress over money. My time is well spent with my young kids, as you only get to see your kids grow up once. Life is good here in the Valley.

Las Vegas being so cheap is a gift and a curse.

Lots of hikings/outdoor activity is the greatest asset in LV. More than the gambling/restaurants. IMHO

I agree. In my search for a retirement area taxes do matter to me. In my list of 8 areas (including my current state of MD for my comparison), NV is the 3rd least expensive in these taxes:

Income Tax (pension)
Dividends, capital gains tax (investments)
Realestate taxes (can vary a lot by specific part of each state)
Personal property taxes
Sales Tax

I feel that sales tax is not as big a deal as some think. Not everything has sales tax (utilities, insurance, food, etc). So when you only tax certain items, the total dollar amount isn't that big a difference. The only exception is when you buy a new big ticket item like a car or boat.

My rankings:
TN (least expensive)
NC (my federal pension is not taxed)
NV
FL
SC
VA
TX
MD (most expensive)

The other things to factor in are housing costs, including home owners insurance. Some places have large wind damage insurance costs (like coastal FL).
