There is a small neighborhood right across the street from Thomas and Mack and across from the UNLV extension offices on Bock St. That neighborhood is actually safe. Nobody knows it is there. A house on that street used to be a frat house and it was great. Liberace Mansion is in that neighborhood along with a youth charity that took 3 houses. It seems the guy who owns Liberace Mansion is cleaning up that neighborhood. Walk to school, walk to the store. Cheap Uber to the Airport, MGM, Hard Rock. We used to walk to the Hard Rock and there is slew of eateries and coffee houses all walking distance. I never had one problem in over 4 years of being there. If I could buy one of those houses and rent it out to students I would. Loved it.

Not many people know this but there are beautiful custom built homes around Harmon and Spencer a stone throw away from UNLV. It is a nice hidden community. I used to hang out at Cafe Roma and the bar upstairs during the 80s, fun times for UNLV. Now it looks like that commercial center next door to 711 is going to be demolished. It's due for redevelopment anyway.

How about the area near Jack Daily Elementary? It's affordable and walking distance to UNLV. I know what "affordable" usually means but with having no car, not too many options.
